Espresso machines

Can anyone recommend one? Is there any difference between a slightly expensive and a stupidly expensive one in terms of the coffee it produces, or is that down to the quality of the coffee used?

Present for dh, and he doesn't want a nespresso one, or any other one that uses capsules, apparently.

Does this thread help at all?

I got the Krups in the end- on Debenhams 10% off day.... however, they are much cheaper if you just want the espresso bit.
QS got the Red Gaggia....
(You are MM yes?)

Very helpful, thank you.

Yes, I am/was MM. I love your name, btw. Always makes me smile - ds1's favourite book.

thankyou- yes- DD was asking for it about 11 times a day when I picked my mn name!
Now she only ever wants Percy Parkkeeper
She loved all the Hairy McLary's though... will have to dig out the christmas one!

My head is spinning with the choices. What people say on MN seems to contradict the reviews on the Good Housekeeping website.

Has anyone got the Kitchen aid one, which GH rate so highly? Very expensive, but not so horrific if I buy it somewhere online tomorrow (House of Fraser) with 20% off.

Why does he not want a Nespresso one? We had both types and I use my nespresso one every day, whereas my extremely expensive Gaggia one was in the garage after a couple of months because of the faff of prepping it/using it/cleaning it.

Apparently Heston Blumenthal uses a Nespresso though that could have just been the sales chap blather.

Kitchenaid one cheaper here for a start - that's 10% off!

ohdearwhatamess · 03/12/2008 16:14

I have no idea why he doesn't want nespresso, but he is adamant on the matter. It may be that they've got one at work which he doesn't like.

Perhaps it's not the best idea to try and convince him otherwise then by just buying him a Nespresso for Christmas!!!

ohdearwhatamess · 03/12/2008 16:22

He's such a stubborn so and so that he wouldn't try just to be polite!

Debenhams also have 20% off until saturday I think.
I have to say I had completely discounted the pod type ones, as I couldn't imagine they tasted anything like as good as real coffee- but a large number of mners say they actually are quite good!
