Digital camera - ordinary batteries or rechargeable one?

Our camera has packed up and we need a new one. The one we had was a canon and quite 'chunky' as it took 4 x aa batteries but we were hapy with it. Some of the ones we are now considering are the same and I loke the fact that as long as you have a pack of spare batteries (which we always have) you;re fine, but lots now have a special rechargeable battery which makes the camera a lot slimmer/lighter, we'd obviously need a spare. Anyone find this type of battery a problem?
