what are the advantages of one over the other.

Duplo is much much nicer to feel. It goes together more pleasantly clickily and the character pieces are IMO much nicer - dinosaurs, Bob the Builder, Thomas the Tank.

Megabloks seem to be all leering cats or princesses.

I love Duplo and Lego.

My local Asda had a huge bag of megablocks for £10.

IMO, Duplo is quality (fit together well, wide range, inspiring) and megablocks are not (garish and cheap). But that's just an opinion.

we've had both, a basic megablocks bag which was good when ds was very young as softer and easier to put together, but really just used for tower building.

Duplo far superior imo, ds especially loved the zoo sets with animals.

Duplo. Especially the farm.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I've also been wondering about whether to get megablocks, duplo or wooden bricks as a birthday present for my ds, (he will be 1) On the lego website it says that duplo is suitable from 18 months, is this for safety reasons or because before this it is too difficult for a younger child to use? What would be the best present for a 1 year old who loves bricks? duplo, megablocks or wooden bricks?

Carameli · 26/11/2008 12:47

thanks for all the advice on duplo and megablocks.

kauto, last year we got my ds a great set of wooden bricks from ELC and it had a string bag to hold them in. He still plays with them and love knocking them over

We are very brand-loyal to all things lego. Duplo, lego, technical lego. It just seems nice. And DP has been collecting technical lego for decades so we already had loads before the children.

Duplo better than megablocks but much more expensive.

Duplo here.
We had megablox when ds1 was tiny, he used it a bit. The xmas he was 2 i bought a 2nd hand ton of duplo, ds2 was 7m and just went straight to the duplo.
Its much much more versatile, we have never bought any of the 'branded' sets like Thomas etc but they play with it for hours making all sorts.
It takes up an awful lot less space than duplo too!
