Slow Cooker Recommendations please!

I really would like to buy one, which one would you recommend and how big - we are soon to be a family of 5! Also which recipe book would you recommend?

Have found the Crock Pot brand, you can saute on the hob before slow cooking - expensive though!!

they are good, make an old pair of boots the texture of velvet. You get good honest comfort food, perfect for winter nights.
