Anybody thinking of buying a telepsope with a child in mind this xmas. Please share your thoughts with me? Dont want plastic kiddy toy really but at the same time it has to be six year old friendly. Also I think we'd have to put a £100 (absolute tops!) limit on it - if it was a good one. Is it a crazy idea - ds is really into planets and space etc but also problem re not too huge and has to be put somewhere in an already cluttered room that he shares with one of his little brothers. We're trying really hard to avoid buying a nintendo ds!!!!

I bought a really good one for my ds at aged 7. The problem is, you have to do it with them. Ours hardly ever gets used because of this. The few times it HAS been out have been really brilliant, but I seldom have time and ds doesn't seem that interested tbh.

Martianbishop knows about good ones. I can't remember the make.

Thanks spidermama - if you're still out there can you tell me what it was called. Ive looked on the web but very difficult to see how suitable for child. Now ds keeps going on and on about it - even so far as telling me where its going to go in his room and when will it arrive, might it arrive before xmas etc etc!!!
Has anyone else got a specific model they could recommend? ,

Am also thinking of buying a telescope for DS for Christmas. Does anyone know anything about this one - seems like a good offer..

That looks quite a good buy. I was recommended an INfinity 76 which is very child friendly but it has just been withdrawn from sale due to handling strap which apparently is now deemed unsafe even though its been on market for about 6 yrs. Absolutely typical!! Its a really child friendly one but not a toy and is much easier to handle. I was thinking of deferring purchase until it comes back on the market as 3 shops have told me that its one of their best sellers for that age of child! However they then started recommending table top/spotting telescopes - I think your thread is one of the ones I was recommended by a shop-ibby dibby although Im not sure what category of telescope that comes under. How old is your son?. Apparently the spotting telesopes do not invert the view whereas proper telescopes will show the view upside down, so not so good to get a spotter if youre looking at a starchart (as they are all printed upside down). Its very tricky isnt it.
