Miele and Smeg Dishwashers, any good?

My dishwasher has packed up again, the insurance is paying out and I have been looking at Smeg dishwashers, but saw a Miele for £399 (the insurance will be paying £379) and wondered what they are like.

TIA

I have had a Smeg dishwasher - a stainless steel one which looked lovely but was not very good at washing the dishes. It was so bad we managed to get it taken back by the store and I subsequently read reviews about it which said that you should only buy it if you wanted a nice looking cupboard as that is all it is useful for.

I have also had a Bosch which was similarly bad and only lasted 2 years. We now have a Miele which we are pleased with. Having heard so much positive stuff about Miele I think I had high expectations and have to say it is fit for the purpose but not as fabulous on things like drying as I had hoped but it was the cheapest model in their range. So I would definitely recommend Miele over Smeg but try and read some online reviews about which ever model you are considering.

We have had two Miele dishwashers and both have been very good. The current one has been in use for about 7 years now without problems. The other one we owned when we lived aborad and left it in the house so can't comment on longevity but I would recommend that you don't get the model with the cutlery tray laid out as a flat extra tray on the top of the dishwasher, dn't even know fi they do those any more. It was supposed to be space saving as you didn't have a cutlery tray in the main body of the washer then but all it did was cut down the height of the top shelf so you couldn't fit any glasses in and you also had to position the cutlery exactly rather than just flinging it in willy-nilly!

Miele are meant to be the best. Smeg are meant to be amongst the worst!

NCbirdy · 20/11/2008 13:38

Ooh, I love the cutlery tray! They get all the cutlery clean rather than the silly baskets where half the spoons end up not cleaned properly!

Miele gets my vote hands down!

idobelieveinghosts · 20/11/2008 13:39

you are joking me...mine is a smeg and have had it just under a year...it washes my dishes fine! its the stainless steel one.....i used to have a zanussi and there were occasions with that one when dishes would come out still dirty.

am worried now.

GrabShellDude · 20/11/2008 13:44

Miele all the way. Flat cutlery tray is great!

Winetimeisfinetime · 20/11/2008 13:46

idobelieve - we had our Smeg 7 or 8 years ago now so they may well have improved them since then.

We knew very soon after getting it that ours was completely useless so if you have been using yours for nearly a year with no problems then hopefully yours will be ok.

warthog · 20/11/2008 13:47

love my miele

idobelieveinghosts · 20/11/2008 13:47

fingers crossed then!

warthog · 20/11/2008 13:49

yes, also love cutlery tray

MmeLindt · 20/11/2008 13:49

We got an ancient Miele dishwasher from my BIL when we were poor students. It was about 10 yo but still washed perfectly. The flat cutlery tray is genius. When we moved out of our flat 3 years later it was still going strong.

I would definitely go for the Miele.

Winetimeisfinetime · 20/11/2008 13:56

Another vote for the cutlery tray here. I really like it and it is safer as there have been incidents where children have injured themselves by falling onto upended knives in cutlery holders that are in the bottom of dishwashers. Isolated incidents I'm sure but the flat tray does keep the sharp stuff out of the way

TheBlonde · 20/11/2008 13:57

no to smeg
ours is okay but the door catch has now broken
smeg = style without function

Pannacotta · 20/11/2008 13:59

Agree Smeg equals style over function.
They look nice but are pants at cleaning anything.
Havent had a Miele dishwasher but the Miele hooever, w machine and drier we bought 5 yearsw ago are all excellent.

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 14:15

miele it is then!! Can't wait to get the voucher and go shopping!!!

I have a smeg stainless steel one and it is rubbish... you can't get normal sized plates in it, the cutlery tray is very annoying and it doesn't dry anything.

annh · 20/11/2008 14:17

Well, I'm obviously in the minority about the cutlery tray then! Although both dh and I swore we were never having another model like that again!

Pannacotta · 20/11/2008 16:58

I agree about the cutlery traym it means its hard to fit glasses in the top shelf and also all the muck from the cutlery gets transferred to the top of the cups.
Also makes it hard to load/unload the dishwasher.

NCbirdy · 22/11/2008 00:42

I am sure the top tray (proper one not the cutlery one) has an adjustable height thingy so as you can drop it down for tall stuff.... will have to look!
