Boring cleaning question - sorry - tiled floor

Our house is Edwardian, and has lovely decorative tiled floor in the hall and breakfast room. The hall is OK, but the breakfast room floor just seems to attract filth ... I don't know why.

I sweep daily, and mop every 3 or 4 days, but it still seems to get gradually dirtier and dirtier. Every 6 months or so I get down and scrub it on hands and knees, which is pretty back-breaking.

Does anyone else have a floor like this? Is there some sort of polish or sealant I can put on it to stop the tiles getting so grubby?

do you really have a how clean is your house book cod?

Doesn't Kleer do this? I know I bought some for a laminate floor but it wasn't suitable, but it would work for tiles and does exactly what you want, I think.

Flashingnose - I did actually try Klear a year or so ago: I used to use it on some horrid lino at our old house. But on these tiles (sorry I don't know what they are called) it didn't seem to work, it didn't seem to put a protective film on them, rather it seemed more to be, I don't know, absorbed or something!

Anyone else got any tips?

I have a steam cleaner and cleaning tiles is the one thing it's really good at. Gets the dirt out of all the little dents and grooves. So the equivalent of your get down and scrub but without the hard work and every time you clean. Sealants don't seem to do anything much IME.

Oh I like the idea of a steam cleaner. What else do they do? How much should I pay to get a decent one?

They're great for cleaning hard floors, spot cleaning upholstery amnd carpets (but not overall cleaning of either) and car wheels. They're not much cop at the other jobs they claim to be good at (or at least other things are much better at things like cookers and bathrooms).
Worth paying for a reasonable amount of steam pressure but you don't really need lots of attachments and gizmos.
