Highchairs... TrippTrapp and Svan

I've read great reviews of these two highchairs along with one or two comments that they may be prone to tipping. Are they really? Has anyone's little one actually managed to topple one and if so, how?

Aside from that ... any recommendations for one above the other. I like the fact that the Svan has it's own clip on tray but see that the TT now has a lipped mat or something for the table.

How steady do babies need to be before using them? We used a M&P highchair with older DS's but it was wicked to clean so want something trendy and simple this time around. These two don't look quite so supportive for younger babies - am I right? DTs are 6 months, not sitting unaided - DT1 has better back control than DT2 who tends to wobble much more.

All advice welcome!

My DS managed to topple his tripp trapp!!
We have a tiled floor in the dining room - had left DS to get his breakfast, and as I turned my back, he got his foot under the table top, pushed and toppled the chair, hitting his head on the radiator behind. It was very scary, and said tripp trapp is now in pieces upstairs in the attic!

OMG Ouch! What age is/was he? Heavens, that is scarey. What are you using now?

We have three tripp trapps (one for each ds) and they have never been tipped. We have laminate floors though so if they push back on the table, the chairs just glide backwards across the floor.

The old style tripp trapps were not very supportive for babies at all. I can remember wedging both ds1 and ds2 in with towels at 6 months. Ds3 is in the new style one and it is much more supportive. He is 4 months on Friday and has been sitting in it for a couple of weeks (NOT eating of course! he just likes to sit at the table with us!).

We have the dan chair for both our boys, again laminate flooring so they push away from the table.

We got ours for about £50 each, from Macro. We absolutely love them. Every time they grow a bit then we just adjust the chair. Ds1 is 5 1/2 and Ds2 is 2 1/2.

Ours both had Tripp Trapps, and I don't think they ever tipped them over. I used to trap DS in the TT so he could sit at the work-surface and 'help' me cook (or eat breadsticks). I think they were in the TT at about 6 months - but maybe we did the towel-wedging thing, too? (I'm not sure - we definitely did it in the buggy).

I bought a svan for DD1 and liked it so much I bought another for DD2! They have never tipped and, with the baby surroundy thing and the tray, were absolutely fine for both of mine from about 5 months or so.

Onlyaphase · 16/11/2008 21:19

I've got the Svan for DD - she has used it from 6 months and is still very happy in it at 2yrs. I've always used the cushions you get with it, plus a harness for the last year or so. She hasn't tipped it yet, and always seems very comfortable.

Miyazaki · 16/11/2008 21:20

I have a very solid toddler and she has never managed to topple it over.

Millie1 · 16/11/2008 22:24

Thanks for the replies everyone ... am really torn but feel reassured re the tipping ... ours will be in tiles so assume it will push away rather than tip. The Svan's look lovely - tbh they're my preference but unfortunately there are no stockists of either within a 100 mile radius so I'll be buying on-line without seeing/playing with them first which is why I'm so interested in your recommendations. Need two at the same time so it's a £££ investment. Oh, do the cushions wash well for both? TIA again

Sorry on tiles, not 'in' tiles

We used the cushion once. Was a waste of money. Bought ours from back in action who rec not using the one that goes on the bottom anyway. I wouldn't bother.

IlanaK · 16/11/2008 22:54

We did not use the cushions when ds's were little as they would get too messy. However, now ds1 (7) and ds2 (4) use the cushions as they find it much more comfortable.

Onlyaphase · 18/11/2008 16:09

Yes, Svan cushions wash well and keep their shape, plus they dry really quickly too. It was one of my worries too when I got the Svan, but the cusions have been fine.

Whereabouts are you?

Millie1 · 18/11/2008 16:25

Thanks all ... have just placed an order for 2 Svan's! Hope we've (ie. I) made the right choice

In NI Onlyaphase and only one stockist in Ireland about 160 miles away.
