BORING but important, IRON recommendations pls

I dont want to spend a £100 on an iron (believe me i have better things to fritter money on) so a good, reliable iron as mine went POOF and shorted the electrics

Definitely go for a steam generator, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. I've got a Tefal protect GV9150 but paid nearly £200 for it 18 months ago.
