Which games console for whole family use?

Am considering getting a games console for all of us to use. Dh and I had a playstation before the dcs came along and i loved platform games and dh played golf. Dd1 is 7 and dd2 is 3. Dd1 plays on a VTech at the childminder's and enjoys it, but she's not desperate for a computer or anything and we'd certainly limit its use. We've played on other people's Wiis and enjoyed it.

If we were going to get something, would it be better to get an Xbox, a Wii, playstation or what? Or if none of us are particularly desperate for it, is it worth it? Will it be a slippery slope? JUst thought it might be fun...
