Plonker · 07/10/2008 22:02

I want to get dh a Sat Nav for Christmas.

I was a little when i saw how many different ones there are on the market!

What should i be looking for? Does it need to be all singing all dancing, or will a bog standard one do the job just as well?

Have you got one?

What do you recommend?

Links please

I think the key thing you have to decide upon is whether you want fixed maps, or active content (ie pay a subscription for speed cameras and traffic jams).

I love my Tom Tom....despite the fact it sends me to random places.

Decide how much money you want to spend and then get teh best spec for that price.

Dh travels a lot giving estimates to folk.

His work is fairly local (generally up to around 40 miles) and he is always occasionally gets lost. So just to help him get from A to B will do

in that case a basic tom tom or Garmin of about £120-£150 should surfice. they are the top 2 brands in general.

I've got a TomTom One 3rd Edition and although it sometimes tries to send me one motorway sliproad and down the next some funny ways you can ignore the instruction if you know a better shortcut and it will reset itself. I think it was about £100.

I have a Garmin $300, have used it in England with European cartridge, was brilliant.
