Kids digital cameras. Any good, or would I be better off buying DS1 a proper digital camera with his birthday money?

this one is £20.

or this kids one is £50.

DS1 is 4. it was his birthday yesterday and he got some money, some elc vouchers and has a 20% off thing for elc.

what do you think?

OOh, there's obviously something in the air here

Dragonbutter · 02/10/2008 23:07

dd is 5 and if I was buying one for her, I'd get a proper one not a toy one.
is your ds quite careful with things? you could get him a real one but one that's a bit larger, not all are tiny
I'd want to see it first though, try toysrus?

MinkyBorage · 02/10/2008 23:14

Sorry, I thought the toysrus link was on that thread, I reckon I'll go for this.

MinkyBorage · 02/10/2008 23:16

Out of the two you've suggested, I'd go for the vtech one, it looks a lot sturdier. I think DD would like the first one, but in reality it will get dropped a lot, and won't bounce. DD is only 3 though.

Dragonbutter · 02/10/2008 23:17

they have a kids one at his nursery that he uses alot. he uses ours carefull too and goes off setting up his pictures of his toys. and he's soooo quiet when he's doing it

minky, i think that is the one he uses at nursery, i thought the picture were quite blurred compared to what he takes on ours.

am half tempted to give him ours so we can get a new one, but i can't do that with his birthday money.

We've got both. Dtwin 2 had the V-Tech for his bday, dd won the Fisher Price one today!!!!!!!! They use both at pre-school.
I prefer the V-Tech as you can do more with it. You can put noses ,hats backdrops onto your pics. Beware it also has games on it!!!!!! My sons are 5 and it's perfect, I just leave him to it,wouldn't with a real one.

The Fisher Price one is totally waterproof but better for 3/4 year olds imho, very basic.

We haven't printed any pics yet but to be honest I'm more into them framing, looking for good subjects etc.

MinkyBorage · 02/10/2008 23:31

My DD is the same, absolutely loves taking pics on our camera. I've got an old camera that needs fixing, and was considering giving that to dd, but am worried that it will just break if it drops. Hmmmm, maybe we should do that, they get a lot of pleasure out of taking proper pics, and get something else for birthdays. Also those ones designed for kids have a viewfinder with two eye holes which just isn't right for our budding photographers, surely! Is there abything else he wants??

Dragonbutter · 02/10/2008 23:36

he got what he wanted yesterday.
a wall-e robot.
and eve and mo.
his life is complete now.

Ds1 has the Fisher Price one which I agree is good for a 3-4 year old - my sister bought it for his birthday after he broke my camera whilst she was supervising him using it! Pretty unbreakable, he can use it fine, though often takes good pictures then deletes them all which annoys me though it shouldn't. The pictures look much better when they are downloaded than they do on the camera screen.

i have been researching these all week and am now stuck between the vtec and the fisher price - dd will be 6 and was going to get a cheap adults one but i know ds will get hold of it and trash it. I am interested to know how long the batteries last on both and also how many mega pixels if any either are.

lunavix · 04/10/2008 20:46

What's so irritating is the pink one is only £29.99 in argos in the clearance bit. Grr

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 04/10/2008 20:50

luvanix - whih one is 29.99? pink would do my dd........

tortoise · 04/10/2008 20:58

DD1 has the vtech one and loves it. She takes some good photos on it and loves the games too.

nappyzone - i think it's the vtech or fisher price one.. look in the clearance section on toys in argos

lunavix · 05/10/2008 10:04

dragon - I would personally get my 4yo ds the kids one, whichever one is better

(I believe one of the brands is also around £30 at costco too but don't know which)

Simply because when I gave him my old one, and he's a very careful boy, he accidentally dropped it and was devestated when it wouldn't work.
