do american dvd's work over here?

that it really, i am going to new york and dont want to buy dvd's if they wont play here.

I de-regioned ours.
There are websites that will give you a code that you put into the dvd player via the remote. SO I can switch ours to the american region for some of our dvds and back to europe for others. You have to put in the make and model of dvd player and you get the code. I have written ours inside the battery compartment of the remote!

Sorry can't remember the website but if you google around enough you should findit.
