Play Pen & Stair gate recommendations

Can anyone recommend a play pen and stair gate or any to avoid. I'm not sure whether to go for a pen with bars or mesh sides. Thanks in advance.

I had one with wooden bars, and found it easier to keep clean. And DD liked pretending she was an animal in the zoo! On the other hand, mesh is lighter and I assume more portable, though I didn't have one.

Incidentally, if you live in the London area and don't mind one second hand, I still have it!
