What's happened to Marie Claire? I haven't touched it in 2 months. The only interesting one for a reasonably intelligent read is (shudder at name!) Good Housekeeping. Or am I getting old? Vanity Fair can be good, too.

Recently Women & Home has been good with a mix of interesting articles. This months GoodHousekeeping is so much on image with it's cosmetic surgery feature, article on attractive women 30s - 70s, makeover and hair article. Read the mag & thought were's the stuff on feeling good as yourself. So shallow to go on about appearence.

That was a friendly point you in the right direction not a WHY don't you look in archived threads !

I love Wallpaper, not a women's mag as such but it's good (although i cannot realte to a single thing in there in terms of actually ever buying/trying out whatever they present in there)
Does anyone remember Options? I used to love it , it was very good on health topics too.

GH and W&H are both good although I cringe a bit as I buy them! MC used to be good, seems to cater for 17 year olds now. Red is good, although some articles a little inane in the style of Cosmo.
Generally I am pissed off about paying through the nose for loads of adverts!
Q is excellent and funny.
Living Etc full of good ideas.
Junior has plenty of intelligent articles between the silly fashion pages and adverts for baby perfumes and the like.

and Top Sante is OK too, although I find it got too commercial in the past few years and the fact they introduced a style section annoys me slightly because it just makes it look like any other mag. Their health topics used to be better too.

and can't help myself buying Oprah when going on a longer journey on my own.

thanks, marthamoo. Mortified to learn that GH is for 50+ age group. Not true! I soooo agree about the ultimate orgasm, where to get the latest fashion knock-off, what x's sex life is really like, etc., etc. Boring, boring, boring! French Marie Claire is much better. (No, I'm not French!) It does assume that most women are moderately intelligent & interested in something besides themselves. North American magazines horrify me, except for Parents and Child.

Yes,agree on the french MC thing. It's an intelligent read, as our MC used to be(when Nigel Slater wrote for it years ago.)

For fashion I buy glamour and Instyle, if I am looking for dressmaking inspiration I buy vogue. I used to buy red when it first came out and I loved it but gave up on it - not sure why.

I buy good housekeeping - but I ask for it to be put in a brown bag and I read it when no one is in.

I buy Junior as I like the articles and I save the more informative ones for my families at work. THe clothes do tend to be batty but I again I use them as dressmaking inspiration. When dd was at tumbletots I used to get quite a good parenting magazine which I ahve also seen in Smiths - Right Start???

I subscribe to Prospect.

I also buy the dressmaking and photography magazines.

God no wonder I am always broke and my house is always a mess!

God, I so miss papers and magazines when I'm in Turkey. I even get my sister to send me the Saturday Telegraph. Costs me £10 p&p!! I know, I'm barking!

I am a magazine junkie. I get Red, Eve, She, Real, Junior and Now to keep up with the gossip.

What do you all do with them when you've read them? I keep special ones,some I give to my local doctors' surgery,others to a day centre.
I don't really pass them to friends as in the past i have felt used as a buyer of expensive magazines for other people!
Was thinking about passing some on to a women's refuge. What do you think? Would it cheer people up or would it be a flippant gesture.

I am happy anywhere, as long as there's a few magazines,even dog eared old copies of People's Friend (at a push!)

I just generally chuck mine out for recycling. Although the refuge idea strikes me a good one. I shouldn't think it's a 'flippant' gesture, I would guess that it would represent a place to escape from their troubled situation and be 'normal' again for a bit.

I think Eve is the best of the bunch.

Yes, I rather thought this NdP. Something very comforting about curling up with a coffee and a magazine, and wouldn't have thought there was much money to spare for this sort of thing in a refuge.

Rare as hens' teeth in this part of the world.
Love the idea of a world where women are bored/rich/idle enough to spend hours fashioning complicated bows out of grosgrain and frosting violets.

moondog, prospect is a mixture of poilitics, current affairs and culture, very london biased but very well written.

My dressmaking isn't that amazing but reading magazines helps me to look at the rather ordinary and often dowdy clothes in pattern books and imagine them as soemthing more glamourous. Gives me ideas about fabrics and trends.
