Dishwasher or no DIshwasher - Be honest

Well, after years saying 'I would not have one of them given' and having a husband who does not know how to wash up (I went away last week weds to sat and came home to find the kids breakfast dishes in the sink , his excuse?, he went out and got drunk with the lads and was too hungover to do it ).

I have discovered the joys of a dishwasher, I stayed with a friend last week and used hers and it was fab. I have bought and IndesitIDL700 and now sat twiddling my thumbs waiting for it to arrive and baulking at the thought of going to wash up the few dishes I have.

What do you think of yours?

So I should get rid of the washing machine to put one in, skribble?

Skribble · 18/07/2005 17:16

Well if you have a laundrette or MIL nearby

Tortington · 18/07/2005 17:17

nah scummy - your brats not old enough to wash-up yet? i had mine trained at 18 months!

ScummyMummy · 18/07/2005 17:18

Love the idea... But am SO lazy about all forms of housework that I'm not sure I could drag myself plus huge amounts of washing to the launderette.

Skribble · 18/07/2005 17:19

Well put clothes in bath with children and let them scrub them. Persil plays havoc with their skin though

ScummyMummy · 18/07/2005 17:19

Hmm, another good plan, custy. But making/letting the bratlets do it takes too much supervision atm- which is almost as boring as doing it myself...

ScummyMummy · 18/07/2005 17:21

My mum used to make me and my sister do that, skribble! She was a sort of middle class luddite technophobe who took pride in torturing her kids...

Skribble · 18/07/2005 17:24

Is that true SMummy I was joking honest. I used to whine about how I couldn't get washing dry in flat and how the damp clothes everywhere were bad for baby, she used to take my washing when she came to pick kids up for visits.

Skribble · 18/07/2005 17:24

Sorry she being MIL.

spidermama · 18/07/2005 17:28

I have 4 kids and no dishwasher. Hardcore or what?

Fio2 · 18/07/2005 17:37

I bought my first one about a month ago

I still drool over it now, heaven knows why we didnt have one before, but I havent washed anything up for weeks and boy it feels good. I feel empowered, I am in love

ScummyMummy · 18/07/2005 17:41

It is true! But she thought it would be fun for us- I was being flippant with the word torture. My mum was not a torturer at all but merely a quirky fabster who had v odd ideas about housework. It was quite funny jumping and splashing all over clothes slippery with washing powder, actually, but I have no idea why my mum thought this was an effective or enjoyable way to do the washing and it took her bloody ages!

Skribble · 18/07/2005 17:45

Spidermama I'm sure that gets you extra mumsnet points.

strugstu · 18/07/2005 21:48

had my zanussi for 12 years - and use it every day.

(have probably cursed it now)

assumedname · 18/07/2005 21:51

strugstu - my Zanussi lasted 14 years before it gave up recently. Very pleased with that.

eidsvold · 18/07/2005 23:59

love it.... when I moved to the UK and did not have one in the first two places I lived... pain doing the dishes... then we had one in the hosue we rented.... - when it died ( 16 years old!!) We missed it....

Janh · 19/07/2005 00:04

Was she a hippy type, scummy? (Am assuming from comments elsewhere about your age that this was 1970s?)

She does sound fab

ScummyMummy · 19/07/2005 00:13

Had her hippyish moments, I think, janh.

colditz · 19/07/2005 02:00

I have a dishwasher. My dp had a tax rebate, and gave me a choice - a dishwasher, or a bedroom carpet.

Well, we're still walking on floor boards.....
