Dishwasher or no DIshwasher - Be honest

Well, after years saying 'I would not have one of them given' and having a husband who does not know how to wash up (I went away last week weds to sat and came home to find the kids breakfast dishes in the sink , his excuse?, he went out and got drunk with the lads and was too hungover to do it ).

I have discovered the joys of a dishwasher, I stayed with a friend last week and used hers and it was fab. I have bought and IndesitIDL700 and now sat twiddling my thumbs waiting for it to arrive and baulking at the thought of going to wash up the few dishes I have.

What do you think of yours?

I have one, but I can't say it is that important to me. I can only use it for kids stuff mainly, as all the other stuff is too expensive to risk in it. I wont risk cutlery and dishes in case they get marked or broken. Exp knives shud't be put in there and crystal def can't be risked.
We don't use a washing up bowl neither as it's not very hygenic, so most of our stuff gets washed under running water as soon as it's been used so no big piles of dishes!

handlemecarefully · 15/02/2005 14:58

Also love my dishwasher...not only cuts out the washing up but the drying up too

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 15/02/2005 14:59

bubbles, get the dishwasher. You're about to have twins, you don't have time to wash up or even argue about it.

FineFigureFio · 15/02/2005 14:59

never had one either
but I am buying one sharpish

Chandra · 15/02/2005 15:10

Kelly, I used to be the same until somebody asked me, if they get ruined, how expensive is to buy them again? and it's true, less expensive than spend so many hours doing the dishes. (Expensive stuff that could be damaged is now part of the Christmas table service )

alicatsg · 15/02/2005 15:10

Its a wondrous thing, I can't remember how I managed without.

NOW DH and I get to argue about his inability to put anything in the dishwasher and preference for creating a field of washing up across the draining board in manner of man-deficient-in dishwasher-and-sense. Gin

alicatsg · 15/02/2005 15:11

ooops - I meant

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2005 15:11

£12 a plate is def not worth risking. I shud keep them for special, but at that price I want to make sure they get used!

Catbert · 15/02/2005 15:12

Get rid of your cupboards and have TWO dishwarshers I say... That way, you just have to move stuff from one to the other!!!

(I've always thought that I would do that one day!)

MINNIE1 · 15/02/2005 15:14

I alway had one when i was renting, them we bough a 2 bed town house and we could'nt fit one in (the kitchen was tiny), 3 years on we still have no diswasher and have a 4 bed house with a bigger kitchen.. OMG i really need to get one don't i!!!! Now there is only 2 of us in the house at the min..

NameChangingMancMidlander · 15/02/2005 15:17

Love it. I do wash our 'expensive (£25 each) plates' in it. In fact the only thing that I don't put in it are DH's expensive chefs knives (it blunts them) and a pair of v expensive champagne flutes. If it fits in, it gets washed

Cam · 15/02/2005 15:17

Yes yes yes to dishwashers. Don't need to sterilise any babies feeding bits either if you put them through the dishwasher. Another must: stainless steel pans so that they can go in too.

gingerbear · 15/02/2005 15:46

Having a dishwasher is like having children, once you have one you can not imagine life without it

That has to be the quote of the day Chandra!!

clairabelle · 15/02/2005 15:48

I too couldn't do without mine and all my Villeroy & Boch goes in. Hang the expense I say!

Bozza · 15/02/2005 15:49

I love having one. Think it is a brilliant invention. Ours does ruin the glasses and I don't put the crystal ones in, but everyday ones just get replaced periodically. The Denby dinner service seems to handle it OK.

Slinky · 15/02/2005 15:51

Couldn't be without a dishwasher - when the electrics screwed up in the kitchen the other week, my first thought was "shit, won't be able to use the dishwasher"

Everything goes in (including my expensive dinner service) apart from my very fine wine glasses.

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2005 15:52

Bozza I've got Denby, and I daren't risk it!! maybe I should be braver.

RudyDudy · 15/02/2005 16:10

I love my dishwasher! Washing up used to be a real battle in our house and would get left for days - I love having a tidy kitchen just through loading it up. It's like tidying the bedroom by putting all the clothes on the floor in the wash!

I put everything in apart from my non-stick saucepans. My Denby is fine with it, though some glasses with patterns on have faded. A small price to pay...

Poshpaws · 15/02/2005 16:15

Kelly1978, I put my Denby in the dishwasher all the time. That's what I love about Denby - so hard wearing.

Oh, and my crystal glasses

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2005 16:17

mm I might have to give it a try, one thing at a time. The cystal is def nt going in tho, I can't afford to replace that!

Poshpaws · 15/02/2005 16:19

Hmm... may explain whay I only have about 2 of the crystal glasses left from my wedding gift from work

alicatsg · 16/02/2005 13:51

my question is "how come I don't have very fine wine glasses???" I feel cheated.

littlemissbossy · 16/02/2005 13:53

OMG couldn't survive without mine! even once begged a shop to let me have the showroom model rather than wait for 2 weeks for delivery - the dishwasher turned up complete with dishes inside, literally straight off the display LOL

lapsedrunner · 16/02/2005 13:56

Couldn't live without it, everything goes in (even if its not meant to)!

BubblesDeVere · 16/02/2005 14:04

Not go mine yet, still waiting for it, but there was a deal on in Tesco's so I bought myself a box, i'll have to hide it from hubby as he will think i've jinkxed it somehow.
