Is a bunk bed safe for a 4 year old?

We're just putting together an ikea bed for ds (5 in November). It's actually not a bunk bed but a raised bed with a space underneath so not as high. Anyway we now find that the instructions say to beware of young children (under 6) falling out.
Has this happened to anyone?

You can still fit a bed guard on it. I know of a child who broke his arm by falling off a bunk bed. I think it depends on the child.

Oh dear
Thanks!

We have a bunk bed - double bed on bottom, single on top.

My DD's are 4(just) and 2.9mnths.

They have been sleeping on it for about 3 months now and love it. DD2 even likes to sleep up the top sometimes!

We havent had a falling out incident yet!

berrie - they can break their arm falling off the couch! If you think your child is ready for a bunk bed then get it.

Does it have rails around the edges? My dd1 has had a raised cabin bed since she was 4 and has never fallen out. It is somewhat more worrying when she tries to bounce on the bed with dd2 and her friends...

DS2 fell out of a cabin sleeper spectacularly (about midnight) just before his 4th birthday. I won't try him in it again for a very long time.

Is it this type of bed?.

My DS has one like that since just before he was 4 and has been fine (touch wood). The rail stops him from rolling out

This one
Not nearly so posh!
The guard at the side doesn't look very big does it?

That's big enough to stop them rolling out.

I fell out of a bunk bed at 27 and broke my arm.

My dd1 (5) has been in a bunk bed for six months and has never fallen out.She however routinely falls out of other beds!

Thanks all.
It's up now. Have put ds's old bed underneath for dd (nearly 3)am plotting what I am going to do with dd's empty bedroom although I know it will simply hide all the junk and piles of washing!
