Help - what to wear on my feet, with a dress?

It's a million years since I bought and wore a dress, but I have lost a load of weight lately (am now size 16-18), and I thought maybe I could just about get away with one now. I like the midi length (I'm 76 so I won't be wearing short!) and have been quite tempted by a few I've seen in White Stuff and Roman, for example, although even the 'petite' range seems too long for the likes of me (only 5'3"). Also, in all the pictures, women only ever seem to wear long boots or ankle boots with these dresses. Is that the only way it is, these days? I don't have boots (lipoedema legs) and don't ever wear heels, so I'm rather at a loss to know what footwear might be possible for me if I got a dress. Do you think I have any chance of finding anything or should I just give up and stick with trousers and tunics forever....?

Could you manage a 'wedge heeled' shoe?

Part of the fun of losing weight is trying out new clothes - so i would definitely try to explore new stuff. Having said that the wardrobe wears most of my dresses. I just find trousers/jeans easier.

How are the dresses that you like styled - what are the online models wearing?
My go-to is those flat runners

EatY0urVeg · 08/10/2026 22:54

Google these - Arch Fit Arcade - Arcata

They're skechers like converse. I saw them in the shop today. They are very flat which you may not like

I have the same problem. I'm in my late 60s. In the summer I wear sandals with dresses but I don't know what to wear with them in the autumn and winter. I walk a lot so need something comfortable. I don't think wedge shoes are practical for walking and I'm not keen on Mary Janes as someone suggested up thread and they make me feel like a school child
So I'm following this thread with interest. If anyone could post some links I'd be very grateful.

I wear a lot of ankle boots with dresses, or even coloured, smart trainers. The petite Roman and Next dresses are generally good length for me and I’m a bit shorter, at 5’2”.

Get some leggings that are easy to put on and some soft ankle boots. I've got hotter ankle boots, they do them in various width fittings and colours and they are SOOO comfortable. And no struggling to get them round your calves.

I wear ankle boots, or loafers.

Trainers

I’m not far off your age and have also lost a lot of weight

I’d say ankle boots, Mary Jane’s or white trainers

enjoy trying out new looks, well done on the weight loss

Sainsburys Tu do some nice flexible Mary Janes.

I’m not keen on showing my knees these days so I tend to wear midi dresses with long boots or chunky ankle boots with thick tights.
Trainers are also a good option in spring/summer

Ankle boots, trainers or doc Martens. I can't do heels and get too hot in long boots.

GotMarriedInCornwall · 11/10/2026 10:14

Check out Moshulu. They have some beautiful shoes and ankle boots that would work perfectly with dresses.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 11/10/2026 10:20

Wear trainers. If it’s cold I wear trainers and tights. Or ankle socks. I’m 55 and I also wear knee high boots and ankle boots but trainers are my go to for comfort.
