Cleaning grease/oil stains of a pushchair - help!

When the lovely people at Stansted airport put my nice Loola pushchair into the hold of the plane they managed to get some black greasy stains over the fabric that covers the safety bar and the chair itself. I've been testing the fabric that covers the safety bar first. I used soap and water first - no real effect - put it in the washing machine - shifted a little bit more - soaked it in soda crystals and scrubbed it with soap and water again - it's still there but a bit better - however the scrubbing has made the 'pile' come up a bit. In the manual for the pushchair, it says do not soak and do not machine wash - I don't want to ruin the 'water-proofness' of the chair cover so don't want to risk the same method - does anyone have any ideas or had success with similar stains?

Lakeland "Stain Slayer" is very good on grease - there's very orangey smell to it which takes ages to wear off, but very effective. You spray it on, dab at it, then rinse it away, so not sure how it would work with your fabric though.
