1920s outfits

Morning!

I have a 1920s dressing up party for a friends 40th the weekend after next and have NO idea what to wear. I've done some googling but it's hard to find clothes of the style in normal shops (no links to Amazon dressing up outfits please!)

In terms of budget ideally not loads if it's something I'll wear once but happy to pay a bit more if it's actually wearable again.

I also need an outfit for the husband so feel free to share male ideas too!

THANK YOU!

Yes a flapper dress would be amazing with long beads.
do you have any friends who might have anything you can borrow perhaps or a trip to the charity shop?
men are much easier just a suit with a waistcoat and a pocket watch if you can find one.

Do you have a dress you could twenties up with accessories?
A couple of long strings of pearls, one knotted. Pearl bracelets, sparkly brooches.

A home made headband with a feather in it.
Clutch bag, mary janes, pale tights.
Cigarette holder, feather boa.
Do you know someone with a fur stole you can borrow?

Between a few charity shops and HobbyCraft you might be able to do this on a shoe string.

For you husband - does he have a summer suit he could make a bit Great Gatsby/Brideshead with a straw boater and fat tie?

This is a good idea, I just wore a black dress i already had that was sort of 20s style and styled my hair 1920s style and bought a cheap accessories pack online, although in hindsight the cheap accessories were maybe a bit too cheap, the feathers from the boa fell out all over the place. It did the job though and only cost me a fiver. My husband got his outfit from a charity shop, he said it was very cheap

You could do the androgynous thing with wide trousers, waistcoat, slicked down hair and cigarette in a long holder? Google 1920s androgynous women

Went to a twenties themed murder mystery party last year - did get a flapper style dress off amazon for £20 that was actually fairly decent quality. And some long black gloves. However, the boa from an accessories pack just shed feathers everywhere! So maybe avoid a boa unless you can get a quality one. Wore some Mary Jane style shoes as seemed most suitable. Most people had dressed up. Some women were just in ballgown type dresses, or black tie long dresses, but in a satin look material. And several men in tuxedos. One man dressed like he was a russian prince! Agree that if you have short hair that the androgynous look can be good too.

For hubby then wearing a cricket jumper / vest or other jumper tied around the shoulders in a preppy Bertie Wooster type way could possibly work if wanted to go casual..

Thanks so much guys! Just found these replies. I will have a look at that website as it looks great on first glance. Have you ordered from there before?

I ordered this dress I thought I could make work in the meantime:

Will also have a look in charity shops for the accessories that's a good idea!

I am sure I had a feather boa at uni that did the same thing... left a trail of feathers everywhere I went!
