Hi All!!!

My relative is getting married soon and I’m having a bit out of an outfit crisis and need your advice please!! I’m in my 20s, size 14 and under 5’5 - also quite chubby :D

I’m currently looking at the following dress but not sure if it’s lovely or hideous !

The wedding is formal but not black tie formal - midday ceremony at a private venue with a reception.

Is this a good option please?

asos dress

Thanks in advance!!!

I think it’s a glorious dress. But I wonder if it might not be too hot if you’ll be inside for hours?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 19/03/2026 11:09

I don’t like it at all, sorry op. If it was a different colour, maybe.

Could you bear something like this? (Understand if you prefer to stick to natural fabrics.)

Sister Jane dress

Or something like this in a lighter colour?

All Saints dress

Lots of brands here, many of them are affordable, just scroll:

Given that the model is a fair bit taller than you, I would think it would be a bit over-powering, if not far too long (and not easy to alter)?

MissPrismsMistake · 19/03/2026 11:45

I don’t think the original dress would be problematic to shorten? The tailor would just follow the line of the existing hem, no? And I’d say it’s the length that makes it ‘formal’ - at mid calf it’s just a good dress rather than a celebratory dress. (I have a maxi skirt from ASOS era Topshop that’s exactly the same length on me (not tall) as on the very tall model. I’m pretty sure most brands sell clothes designed to fit the average woman.)

(I hesitate to add this, but my other thought was that the combined structure and colour might be a little discombobulating on someone very young and fresh faced. It wants a little mature swagger …)

That looks much more like the ‘you’ you’ve described, @wifty! Excellent choice.
