Pocket money toys to fill a bag big enough to keep 2 toddlers amused on a five hour car journey?

Would be grateful for any thoughts.

ds's are 3 and 18 months and I know it is going to be hell, but I thought that this way we might make it to the M1 without disowning them.

I've looked at Hawkins Bazaar, but there isn't much for younger children there.

Also would welcome any suggestions for things to put on their laps so that they can play with stuff.

ps, we've got a portable dvd player which will keep ds1 amused for a bit, but ds2 won't watch telly for more than 2 seconds.

Try to make sure you time it so that at least some of the journey coincides with naps.

I've always found books are good, as well as annoying musical toys (i hate them but ds will happily play for ages with something that makes terrible noises).

also food always works well for us. DS's diet is usually ok but i thought he was going to end up looking like a quaver by the time we arrived at our holiday cottage earlier this year as it was the only thing that would keep him quiet for the last 1 1/2 hours.

Aquadraw mats are good as they only use water so drawing in the car doesn't make a mess.

we also often leave for long journey in the early evening, if we can, so that ds falls asleep in the car. just get him in his pjs before we set off and put him in bed when we get where we're going.
