Do comfortable headphones exist?

Just discovered an amazing app which produces music to boost concentration, but after a 2 hour marking session my ears are in pain. I just have relatively cheap wireless ear buds.

Is there such a thing as a pair of headphones that are comfortable for hours and hours? In or over ear. Obviously we all have different ears but I assume mine are relatively standard...

Yes. My autistic son has massive sensory processing issues. He has ones he spends hours in, listening to music.

Go to Richer Sounds. They have a quiet listening room you can trial various headphones in.

He chose some Sony sound-cancelling ones. Not cheap but really well padded, and wireless.

The important thing is that they work for you, so I won't say buy these exact ones. I will say that he's loved them for several years now and uses them daily.

I've got quite small ears and find lots of earbuds uncomfortable but I use pixel buds and they are really good, not the pro ones they are bulkier and uncomfortable to me (DH has them) , I think they are called A series

Anotherdisposableusername · 24/01/2026 16:24

Oh, and what is this app?!

elevenpiperspiping · 24/01/2026 16:30

I have JBL over ear headphones so comfortable. I do like AirPods etc but can only wear them for an hour before my ears get sore. My JBLs I could wear all day

I find headphones and earbuds uncomfortable, or they fall out easily, except Shokz bone conducting headphones, which are brilliant.

Oh, and what is this app?!

It's called brain.fm - I'm only on the free trial at the moment but will definitely subscribe if the boost it gave me today is anything to go by.

Wow, this is an entire innovation that has passed me by! Sorcery! Will check them out.

Thanks all - looks like the answer is to throw some money at it! No wonder mine are so useless - I think they were about a tenth of the price of most of these good ones.

I second JBL. I was an air pod die hard but got some JBL headphones for a long haul flight and rarely use my pods now. The battery lasts ages as well.

I can't use earbuds at all because I have weird ear canals, and I find the big, sound-blocking headphones get uncomfortable after a while too. I tried Shokz but I have a lump behind one ear that it used to rub and irritate, but it might have just been that model.

I use these for hours at a time without any issues. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D2XRXNGY?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

I have the Sony ones a PP linked above and wear them for several hours at a time, no worries. DH buys these ridiculously large ear headphone cushions and changes the standard cushions over. He got the same headphones I have and without even trying them he replaced the ear cushions straight up, which I thought was weird, as I doubt he would have needed to do that if he tried them but no telling him🤣.

Anker Soundcore Q series over ear headphones are very comfortable, with good active noise cancelling and long battery life. Had my current pair for 3 years and going strong. I use them all the time as I'm autistic and need them to cope with outdoor noise.

Just in case anyone's interested, I bought these Anker ones (upthread) from Amazon for about £26, and they are brilliant! Can easily forget they're there. Definitely more in the budget I was hoping for too. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions.

I also use the Shokz bone conductor ones, my ears are just too small and I’ve never found a pair of earbuds to fit comfortably.
