Calling all owners of 7-seater estate cars...

frogs · 24/01/2005 11:26

I fear the time has come when we need to acquire a car, and am thinking of one of those big estate cars with the extra seats in the boot.

If you own one of those (particularly the Volvo V70 or the older 850) what do you think of it? I'm particularly interested in how reliable they are likely to be after about 80K on the clock.

Also (nosey question alert) how do people finance cars? I'd like to keep the cost to a level where we can pay for it out of cash, but that's going to restrict us to an older model with higher mileage. Not sure if this is going to be a wise decision in the long run.

All experiences gratefully received!

oops sorry

I didn't mean it to be rude

It is just that he can put techy stuff into english

and I thought he would be a good dealer as he doesnt bamboozle with tech.

Sorry did not mean to offend

jazzybee · 24/01/2005 13:34

not just too many car mags... too many cars as well. Just put one of mine up for sale in the classifieds section. I must stop buying cars I don't need! I must stop buying cars I don't need! I must stop buying cars I don't need! I must stop buying cars I don't need!

NameChangingMancMidlander · 24/01/2005 13:35

And there was my DH complaining about me buying buggies that I didn't need....

RTKangaMummy · 24/01/2005 13:35
jazzybee · 24/01/2005 13:39

not offended by your comment at all, quite flattering really. Your not in cahoots with Hub2Dee, as he keeps telling me I should get into the car business.... trouble is I can't find a way to make it pay as much as IT. He says I should offer my services as a consultant to help people pick the right car... I do enjoy it -

hub2dee · 24/01/2005 13:39

RTKM - No offence anywhere I've been trying to get my mate jazzybee to DO something with his insane car knowledge for years infact !

Maybe acting as a professional information source for buyers, helping people refine their requirements, etc. etc. Possibly a Web-based information service.

If you can think of a way for him to earn a living leveraging his know-how, do post here to encourage him, or CAT him direct !

RTKangaMummy · 24/01/2005 13:42

you could help mumsnetters

I only know about volvos really

hub2dee · 24/01/2005 14:18

Yes, quite agree Kanga.

All MNers with car buying queries (more 'which model' rather than 'how do I tell if the scratching sound is a worn out wheel bearing'), do post questions for jazzybee.

beachyhead · 24/01/2005 14:26

I'm over on the small MPV thread and I'd like to know which ones are the best for power....We need either a small MPV or a 7 seater of sorts as No.3 is coming soon, but we do a lot of motorway driving (at least 500 miles a month) and we want something that is frankly...fast.

Any ideas - I am allergic to automatics as I can't get the feel of the car..... Our last good car was a Subaru and we loved it....

JanH · 24/01/2005 14:29

Mine is a 2.0 DTi Zafira and it goes

jazzybee · 24/01/2005 14:45

New Zafira should have the 1.9 CDTi engine which should be very good.

JanH · 24/01/2005 14:52

Looks a lot like the Corolla Verso to me

beachyhead · 24/01/2005 14:59

Not sure we are up for a new car - ex demo or 2 years old - looking to spend about 15K

jazzybee · 24/01/2005 15:15

Try Here

You get some good bargains. They are one of the biggest importers in the country, have been around a long while now and have sold tens, if not hundreds of thounds of new and nearly new cars. They always have 20-30 Zafiras in stock around £8-11k

andif · 25/01/2005 13:41

Hi, just wanted to add to conversation. We bought a new volvo XC70 with extra seats in boot 18months ago, and love it. It's a bit more funky than a V70, but not as posey as the XC90. it's the most comfortable car I have ever been in!!

Gobbledigook · 25/01/2005 13:44

For JazzyBee then - if I wanted a Volvo XC70 would I get one anywhere of any use for £15Kish?

suzywong · 25/01/2005 13:46

ahhh .... so this is where the other volvo drivers hang out

RTKangaMummy · 25/01/2005 13:55

Gobbledigook

Do you mean £15,000 + a trade in?

or £15,000 total?

XC70

RTKangaMummy · 25/01/2005 13:57

oops sorry

just realised you were asking jazzbbee

wilbur · 25/01/2005 13:59

This is a v. useful thread, thank you to contributors - we are planning an upgrade when baby #3 arrives this summer, so a 7 seater would probably be what we will look for.

At the end of next week, I'm being loaned a Chrysler Voyager (or Grand Voyager, not sure which yet) to do an article on a family drive out. I'll report back with my findings!

Anteater · 25/01/2005 14:25

Anyone got a Landrover defender station wagon?
Just wondered how safe the seats are in the back, as they face sideways..(Jazzybee...)

I think if money wasnt an issue Id go for a new discovery rather than the XC90..

RTKangaMummy · 25/01/2005 16:12

Gobbledigook

here are two that are around £15000

the 2nd one has 7 seats

the V70 XC is the slightly older version

but still good

piffle · 25/01/2005 16:14

we've got a peugeot 307 sw estate, not much boot space with all seven seats but seats are interchangeable and removebale which is huge bonus, we've had ours 2 yrs and really rate it, we had an audi A4 previously so can be objective
