Looking for a high quality warm wool coat

I've got an ugly puffer at the moment but I'm hoping for something as warm but smart so I can wear to work. I've got a couple of wool coats but they aren't as warm as the puffer. I'm size 10, 5'7. Ideally in black and budget around £200. Hoping for something in the sales.

Following!

Both lovely! Are they very warm? I'm thinking I might have to up my budget to get one of those really thick wool coats I'm dreaming of.

Look for a Max Mara or Marella in the sales if you are open to upping the budget.

it’s been too mild to wear mine as much as I’d have liked to-definitely very cosy

Jumping on this thread, maxmara wool coats are lovely but hesitant about spending £600 or above for one. Been told double breasted style suits me, I'm tall so could go for a long length..

100% wool may be lovely and warm but if you're stuck with an expensive coat that doesn't suit you ?💁‍♀️🤦‍♀️

You could hunt one down on eBay or Vinted? Whether this season, last year's or a more vintage piece, you can find classic, timeless garments at a fraction of the price. Plus, in my experience, women who invest in quality clothing tend to care for their items, so you can almost certainly be assured of a really well looked after coat.

Scattybrain2022 · 28/12/2025 17:18

Ted baker coats are lovely and warm and on sale at the moment!

Hereagain2 · 28/12/2025 19:44

Jaeger do a lovely cashmere/wool mix.

Ted Baker et al have always got some weird man made crap in them.

If you’re anywhere near a Boundary Mill have a look at the sale, you should get one for under £200 and they are a classic style that won’t date.

Aluna · 28/12/2025 21:10

There’s no wool coat as warm as a puffa ime, even thick 100% cashmere.

mamamuminka · 28/12/2025 22:14

I’d pick a larger or oversize silouette coat and wear it with a uniqlo light down gilet or jacket underneath for warmth

MrsW9 · 29/12/2025 01:03

I am thinking about similar and coveting one of these (over budget though). communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-coats-jackets/products/womens-polo-coat-black

PerformativeBewilderment · 29/12/2025 15:08

Please avoid the tie-front ones with a belt - they always make me think of dressing gowns!

Agree with PP to size up to accommodate thick jumper and/ or lightweight puffa. Check out Scandi brands like Acne for this layering style.

Otherwise my tip would be to try one on IRL (Jigsaw do great ones) then track it down on Vinted. I got a beautiful MaxMara coat for £100 instead of £700+

Just under budget and an absolute bargain at 60% off and comes in camel or black - Jasper COnran quality is very good (as is customer service if you want to return it). www.jasperconran.com/products/geraldine-wool-blend-long-coat?variant=44769974190314

Londonmummy66 · 29/12/2025 19:04

JUst seen that you have one from Jigsaw that is a shorter length - Jasper COnran do the coat I linked in the shorter length too at £160 rather than £180.

Londonmummy66 · 29/12/2025 19:22

A second thought - if you want really warm then the best place to look is Scottish tweed - a lot of Harris tweed coats on ebay some at very well under and a lot at around the top end of your budget. Just check the measurements carefully as a vintage 14 is more like a modern 10 and also make 100% sure it has the definitive Harris tweed logo and that the coat itself is tweed not just the collar and cuffs. If you check carefully they are a forever coat - I bought mine in a charity shop 35 years ago and other than relining the sleeves it has lasted me and still looks amazing despite probably being a 1970s model. Decent vintage always lasts.

House of Bruar has some wool coats in the sale.

Aluna · 29/12/2025 20:50

If I were you and you need to be really warm eg commuting I would just get a smarter down coat.

Maria1982 · 29/12/2025 21:27
