Can you buy baby sized cycle helmets?

I really want to start cycling more. I cannot decide yet whether to get a trailer or a baby seat but would want DS to wear a helmet.

The smallest size helmet I have found so far is 48cm and I just want to know if smaller is available. DS is only 6 months old.

I am in Australia but if I can get helmet in the UK that is fine too as I can get Inlaws to send one over.

Thanks!

can he sit up well?

i used a baby seat when dd1 could sit up well and not wobble everywhere.

I cycle a lot - but don't put the kids onto a baby seat until at least 12 months. They get bounced a lot in trailers and on seats. I did once see a woman with a tricycle and a full baby car seat fixed to the back for a smaller baby. Maybe check out Dutch websites - you see all sorts of bicycling contraptions in Holland. Our smallest helmet is 48cm

dd is 10m and wears a 46-53cm Met Elfo thus but I wouldn;t have put her on the back any younger than perhaps 9m, when she was sitting really firmly.

I've seen the Dutch gizmos for attaching a Maxi Cosi Cabrio to the back of a bike, but I think a carseat inside a trailer could be a very good option.

I would say 6 months is quite small for a bike seat - they have to be able to sit up very confidently - lots of jiggling and stuff.

Mine don't wear helmets in the trailer as the back of their heads has to rest against the fabric IYSWIM! However as someone else mentioned there was a thread on here about securing a car seat (bucket type) into a trailer - try a search and see if you can find it maybe? Again if the baby is strapped into a carseat and then secured into a trailer I wouldn't see a helmet as necessary IMO.

Good luck!

Around these parts (where everyone and their dog cycles) babies are usually in trailers in car seats that attach, and there are a few people who have attachments to put the car seat directly onto the back of the bike. These babies don't wear helmets.

Could be worth investigating something similar.

Thank you everyone! He is still a bit floppy and not sitting up yet so I was planning on waiting a few more months - probably closer to summer.

I think I might go for the trailer/car seat option as long as there is still enough space for DD (3yo)too.

I have amazing fantasies intentions of taking the kids to playgroup, kindergarten and small shopping trips using bike power now that petrol prices are rising.
