Big gift ideas for 5 year old son

My youngest has never had a big birthday gift. My eldest has had big presents like a trampoline or a bike. The youngest has obviously benefitted from sharing these things but I’d like to get him something for his 5th birthday that is a big gift given to him.

Looking to spend around £100. Please can I have some ideas?

I assume he's got a decent bike? If not I'd look for a second hand Isla or frog bike at that price point. Otherwise an off road remote control car?

OhDear111 · 11/10/2025 14:20

Lego. Lots to create with a decent set. I’m assuming he’s got a bike of some description.

HundredPercent · 11/10/2025 16:23

Thanks, yes got a frog bike, Lego is a good idea, I’ll look into it, thanks

Maybe a book set? Mr Majeika series or the Boy who grew dragons series?

GoldBalonz · 11/10/2025 20:32

A basketball hoop?

Ilovecrispstoomuch · 11/10/2025 20:34

Playmobil. My boys love it. One of them got a huge pirate ship when he was 5. You can get loads second hand on e-bay.

Ophy83 · 11/10/2025 20:38

What does he like?

When DS was around that age he got playmobil how to train your dragons which are quite impressive, and others year a bruder fire engine and tow truck (particularly good as they can actually spray water/ lift quite weighty items)

HundredPercent · 11/10/2025 20:47

Thanks everyone, a basketball hoop is a good idea but he already has one. We’ve got a bit of playmobile but I was trying to avoid getting more toys, I was hoping to come up with something a bit different. A box set of books is good, I’ll look into that, thank you.

He likes animals but not dinosaurs or dragons. He likes science and space sort of things, and vehicles.

A Yoto player is a lovely gift for a 5 year old.

GoldBalonz · 11/10/2025 21:03

Something like this is a really impressive looking big-ticket item. There are loads of various versions, my ds3 had one similar (but bigger) for his 7th birthday and it was a big hit. Lots are suitable from 5 though.

Thanks I’ve been wondering about a go kart thing, that one looks awesome!

We already have a yoto! Maybe I need to realise we have too much stuff already. I just feel bad that he has never had a big gift from us.

I'm a bit stuck for ideas for my 6yo too, as I feel he's already had most of the standard big ticket things.

He has been asking for a pet for a while though and one of my ideas was a guinea pig or some similar low maintenance pet for his room.

superspace den building set: like magnatiles but giant. All mine love this and play with it regularly getsuperspace.co.uk/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18849441988&gbraid=0AAAAABh-xvrbyl8TIvWE2kKmw6c36DacN&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_LD-rICdkAMV8IdQBh2WNSZDEAAYASAAEgLlGfD_BwE

HundredPercent · 11/10/2025 21:54

A pet did cross my mind too! Not sure we’re quite ready for that though.

I am completely amazed by that magnetic den building set!! It looks fantastic! Never seen it before. I think it’s a bit out of my price range unfortunately but I’m going to see if I can find some second hand. Thanks for suggesting it!

@HundredPercent Not sure if you are near a really good zoo but a day visit? Whipsnade is great for a 5 year old who likes animals. What about a first football match? Does he support a team? I’ve seen dc around that age at Prem league matches. Or what about a castle visit - go exploring for a special day. I know what you mean about toys.

EasyV · 12/10/2025 12:37

How about a telescope if he likes space? You can get kid friendly ones.

HundredPercent · 12/10/2025 18:10

Thank you, my husband suggested a day out too but I wanted something that would last longer. A telescope is a great suggestion! I’ll look into it.

Shameless placemarking for my 5 year old DS. Not long had his birthday and I'm struggling for Christmas ideas
