Rucksack for family daytrips

Hi I need a rucksack for a day trip to hold everything for 1 adult and 2 children .
Any recommendations of a specific rucksack or suggestions which size would be best?
Needs to fit

  • raincoats and jumpers for one adult and 3 children
  • Lunch and snacks for one adult and 3 children
  • Other stuff - book / drawing things
  • A change of clothes for youngest (in case of accidents)
Ideally with padded straps but not too sweaty in the heat. Unfortunately the children can’t carry their own rucksacks TIA

Your best bet is to go to somewhere like Millets and have a look at the range and try them on

You would probably want something in the 25 - 35 litre size day sack. You probably wont need one with a frame but its worth trying them as it will aid the weight distribution if you are going to be carrying it for a long time. Its worth also looking at the straps set up - there are some that are made specifically for women which tend to have different placings for the carrying straps etc - so that they dont press on the boobs too much! Often these are labelled ND - narrow dimensions or similar.

I would recommend paying slightly more for one from a decent brand such as Lowe Alpine or Berghaus - these have far superior straps and padding and are made from higher quality materials; they will last for years and years - the Karrimor and Eurohike brands arent so robust.

If you want to save some money ebay usually has a good selection secondhand, often only used a few times - search by brand

Thanks @carolineol good tip about going and trying a few then maybe ebaying. I didn’t know about the ND option so will look out for that.
Was worried that i would get one too big and it might end up heavy and frustrating
My little kanken is too small and the straps dig in
