DS will be 9, not had any of that electronic game stuff before, got a really crap old tv.

DS....
good as it doesn't need telly. It doesn't inerupt your viewing.
Good cos its portable so you could take it on car journeys etc (if you want to).
Bad if you want to have a multiplayer experience as it is a individual game thing (unless you know someone else with one)

Wii
A bit more social
Can (more) easily restrict time

I personally would go for a DS, unless you want the social multiplayer thing.

It is infinitely cheaper and a usefully portable distraction - ie handy for things like doctors' waiting rooms.

With a wii comes TV pressure too ... Muuum can we have a ginormous tv ...

It is not that much cheaper really.
