I’m done with Amazon. Anyone with me?

A few things happened:

  1. a good few times now I’ve been mortified to accidentally order WAY more than I’ve needed. 100 swim nappies anyone?

  2. lost track of who is an individual seller vs Amazon themselves. I know there are ways to check but the net net is paying over and above for someone else to make a profit. Eg I bought ‘M&S Swiss chocolate’ Christmas tree baubles in a hurry in December, only to realise it arrived from an independent seller and they were over the odds in price. I was stung in my panic. Another time I ordered Well Baby vitamins, again more arrived than I needed and the sell by date was 3 months away…. Sent the box back.

  3. when buying from boutique sellers, items come from China with long shipping timelines and a headache to return (have to pay yourself or if you order multiple items they all need to go back individually) I ordered a good few items for a holiday and fought with Amazon for 2 hours to send them all back in one package to Amazon vs 15 individual returns, a label for each one.

Over all I’ve saved so much money by deleting the app and looking elsewhere for items I really need rather than the easy one click Amazon.

YABU - these are all issues you could pick up on before you get to checkout.

BeachRide · 24/03/2025 15:50

It's not Amazon's fault you're not properly reading what you're ordering. Take some responsibility!

madamweb · 24/03/2025 15:50

I.want to stop using it but I am disabled and struggle to get to the shops and i find it hard to find alternatives

Ponderingwindow · 24/03/2025 15:51

So you make obvious shopping mistakes?

Amazon is a lifeline for people like me with disabilities. I honestly don’t know what I would do without them. I am thankful every day that they exist and deliver such a wide variety of esoteric allergy safe products.

WivVestwood · 24/03/2025 15:52

Sorry, this is a you issue. Not Amazon.

Mistymeg · 24/03/2025 15:54

I know it’s a me issue but I’m still happier without it.

Have no plans to ever give up on Amazon. The issues you cited are easily avoided, can't beat the convenience and returns are amazingly simple.

Unfortunately buying local just doesn't work out sometimes. Trouble finding what I need, nothing in stock, poor customer service and ridiculous return policies.

Mistymeg · 24/03/2025 15:57

January was when I made the decision. I thought others might be anti Amazon and was curious but seems I’ve poked the MN bear…

I don’t blame anyone for ditching Amazon but I’ve got no plans to. I use the service multiple times a week for speedy delivery of something it wouldn’t be quicker or more convenient to source myself.
Your issues were your own incompetence (sorry!).

Others ARE anti Amazon.
They’ll be along soon to reassure you that you’ve made the right decision!

Meanwhile I’m more than okay with spending my money there, they give me a service which I can’t get elsewhere.

ThisCyanTurtle · 24/03/2025 16:00

I'm boycotting Amazon. I live out in the sticks, but am finding that I can often find what I'd like elsewhere online or in the shops for less or maybe a few pounds extra with delivery. Having to pay for delivery is also handy because it makes me question if it can wait until I'm in town or actually if I really need the item at all. Often, it can wait, or I don't actually need it at all! The convenience of next day free delivery leads me to purchasing things I don't actually need.

Nah I never have those issues. Love Amazon!

Middleagedstriker · 24/03/2025 16:02

I've stopped using it as actively avoiding US products especially of the Bezo et al bastards. I've had to be a little bit more organised as shipping can take a couple of days rather than 24 hours but for most purchases that hasn't made a difference.

Bailamosse · 24/03/2025 16:02

I buy as much as I can on Amazon. No other retailer comes close.

CatsChin · 24/03/2025 16:03

I LOVE Amazon. I've gone through phases of trying to support local shops but frankly don't have the time and can't be putting up with the shit and often rude customer service of local shops. Much prefer Amazon.

UpUpUpU · 24/03/2025 16:03

Can honestly say I have never ordered 100 of something when I only needed 1.

I also check what I have ordered before I click buy.

This is a you issue OP and absolutely nothing to do with Amazon (who have saved me on multiple occasions when I have needed something next day and cannot get to the shops.

CheekyFawn · 24/03/2025 16:03

Amazon is brilliant. I don't drive and have little DC, it's a lifesaver.

WatchedEverything · 24/03/2025 16:06

100 swim nappies. 😂 I once thought I had ordered 10 loose bananas from Tesco but it was actually 10 packs of 6. It’s still a family joke now.

I wouldn’t like to be without Amazon though. You can just search by things only sold by Amazon which is what I do as I never buy from other sellers on there.

LollyLand · 24/03/2025 16:08

I cancelled mine as it encouraged me to spend money that I didn’t need to but I do occasionally go back for a couple of months, especially when they give a free trial for 30 days.

TinyTear · 24/03/2025 16:09

Good for you, do you want a cookie?

The problem isn't just Amazon (about the China issue) but you need to be able to check where things are coming from - I needed something that I only found on ebay and also coming from bloody china! Ebay was supposed to be local and more personalised... But i was aware of it when i purchased...

You do you, I would rather save money and get things in 24 hours or less.

I do often use local shops (even if I pay more) such as to get a book on the day of release or to be able to actually feel and touch the item. But they sure are convenient.

Radiatorvalves · 24/03/2025 16:10

I’m trying to use it less. I reckon I spend more than they pay in tax in the Uk. And there’s the impact on the high street. And that’s before we start thinking about Trump and his tech supporters. But agree not easy for everyone. On the odd occasion when I’ve cocked up an order I’ve found them very efficient.

ScribblingPixie · 24/03/2025 16:15

I find it (almost) indispensable but I got an email from them recently warning me that some supplements for my dog I'd bought from them were fake and shouldn't be used. That was a wake-up call.
