I’m done with Amazon. Anyone with me?

A few things happened:

  1. a good few times now I’ve been mortified to accidentally order WAY more than I’ve needed. 100 swim nappies anyone?

  2. lost track of who is an individual seller vs Amazon themselves. I know there are ways to check but the net net is paying over and above for someone else to make a profit. Eg I bought ‘M&S Swiss chocolate’ Christmas tree baubles in a hurry in December, only to realise it arrived from an independent seller and they were over the odds in price. I was stung in my panic. Another time I ordered Well Baby vitamins, again more arrived than I needed and the sell by date was 3 months away…. Sent the box back.

  3. when buying from boutique sellers, items come from China with long shipping timelines and a headache to return (have to pay yourself or if you order multiple items they all need to go back individually) I ordered a good few items for a holiday and fought with Amazon for 2 hours to send them all back in one package to Amazon vs 15 individual returns, a label for each one.

Over all I’ve saved so much money by deleting the app and looking elsewhere for items I really need rather than the easy one click Amazon.

I wish there was a way to get the benefits of Amazon without supporting someone who's already as rich as Croesus🤬

OxfordInkling · 08/04/2025 13:06

I could battle my way through town, being subjected to crowds, noise and dirt. People will try and sell me big issues, random ‘art’ or bump into me. And children will be seeing everything and going ‘can I’ every five seconds.

Or I can go online, type in what I want, quickly check the price and amount (highly recommend this step), and click ‘buy’. No sweat, no fuss, no hassle, and it’ll turn up the following day.

The hair and beauty products are usually fake so dont buy those from Amazon you have no idea what is in them.

Thank you! You have no idea who is selling them. I bought last minute chocolates for the Christmas tree and paid way over and above on price, it was from someone reselling them from the supermarket. Same with pouches I needed for a last minute weekend, I had so much packing to do that I ordered them on Amazon and again was an independent seller who had bought them in Lidl! I don’t read the finite details when in a hurry and they capitalise on that.

It really is on you to read what you’re buying. If the information is there , it’s just that you’re nor reading it, it’s your fault.

I only buy things actually sold by Amazon and I’ve never had any issues.

Don't worry. Amazon does not need you.

Doesn't need customers?

Badbadbunny · 08/04/2025 14:10

I prefer Amazon for two reasons.

Firstly, the speed and accuracy of delivery - nearly everything is delivered correctly and on time, and the few times something has gone missing or arrived damaged, Amazon has refunded/replaced without any stress.

Secondly, the ease of returning stuff when you change your mind or it's not what you expected it to be. Again, easy and no stress.

Compare that with Royal Mail where it's a lottery if, when or where it will get delivered. I've had loads of letters/parcels go missing or misdelivered via Royal Mail.

And re returns, it's often such a stress and hassle taking stuff back to the likes of Argos and Currys for a refund as they seem to take it as a personal affront and act as if you're wanting them to sacrifice their first born child to just do in accordance with their returns policy and actually give you a refund for changing your mind within the specified number of days, and even worse to get a refund or exchange for something faulty as they tend to pretend they don't understand consumer rights laws and try to fob you off by telling you to contact the manufacturers direct, when the law says it's the retailer's responsibility!

None of that stress and hassle with Amazon. As some mentioned above, physical shops often don't help themselves, with making returns a stressful experience, lack of stocks, etc.

Smart customers, it does.

TeeBee · 08/04/2025 14:16

I have an app on my laptop which searches for better shopping deals; and another for searching for discount codes, so I don't over-pay for anything. I'd like to give up Amazon but it is so convenient for a lot of things. I do shop around and buy things direct from British sellers if I can. I want the best quality for my money.

I deleted Prime recently, and the result is that I buy much less from Amazon.

Losing the option for next day delivery makes me much less likely to buy things instantly on a whim. If there is something I really need, I leave it in my basket until I have enough eligible items for free shipping.

Prime was such a rip-off. And Amazon just seems now to be mountains and mountains of poor quality tat, with a search function that is gaming you all the way to the checkout.

If I want cheap tat now, I go to B&M.

I.want to stop using it but I am disabled and struggle to get to the shops and i find it hard to find alternatives

It takes a bit more time to find what you need, but it is possible and I find I have saved money as Amazon are quite often no longer the cheap option.

Thebrink · 18/10/2025 21:00

I won't be giving it up. Yesterday I realised I was almost out of cat litter. Same price in Pets At Home as Amazon. No local independent pet shops. I am disabled, sight impaired, live alone and unable to drive. So being able to order from Amazon for delivery to my door today is great. I would really struggle to manage without it.

I missed their reply and now it’s been removed. Curious to know what it said.
