I’m done with Amazon. Anyone with me?

Mistymeg · 24/03/2025 15:47

A few things happened:

  1. a good few times now I’ve been mortified to accidentally order WAY more than I’ve needed. 100 swim nappies anyone?

  2. lost track of who is an individual seller vs Amazon themselves. I know there are ways to check but the net net is paying over and above for someone else to make a profit. Eg I bought ‘M&S Swiss chocolate’ Christmas tree baubles in a hurry in December, only to realise it arrived from an independent seller and they were over the odds in price. I was stung in my panic. Another time I ordered Well Baby vitamins, again more arrived than I needed and the sell by date was 3 months away…. Sent the box back.

  3. when buying from boutique sellers, items come from China with long shipping timelines and a headache to return (have to pay yourself or if you order multiple items they all need to go back individually) I ordered a good few items for a holiday and fought with Amazon for 2 hours to send them all back in one package to Amazon vs 15 individual returns, a label for each one.

Over all I’ve saved so much money by deleting the app and looking elsewhere for items I really need rather than the easy one click Amazon.

We’re ditching Amazon this year and will be supporting local businesses. Even if it costs more it’s worth it to avoid supporting a tax avoiding billionaire with questionable business practices.

SalfordQuays · 24/03/2025 16:25

In general I’m not a fan of companies like amazon that seem to corner the market, don’t pay enough tax etc. But when it comes to online shopping I tend to default to amazon or ebay, because I’ve had so much trouble with returns with other companies. So many websites simply don’t reply, ever. The commonest complaint I see on trustpilot is people saying they’ve been trying to contact the company about a problem, and there’s no phone number and no reply to emails. It’s so frustrating. I’ve had to do credit card chargebacks twice now, because of online companies going AWOL. At least with amazon and ebay you know someone will reply if you contact them.

CulturalNomad · 24/03/2025 16:26

Others ARE anti Amazon.
They’ll be along soon to reassure you that you’ve made the right decision!

Absolutely, along with their self righteous list of goods and services they're boycotting. Apparently it doesn't count unless you broadcast it to the public...repeatedly.🙄

It's your money, spend it where you like. Nobody else really cares.

Fagli · 24/03/2025 16:32

I’ve only ever had great service from them. They refund with no quibble, same or next day delivery. The amount of time and energy it saves us having scheduled deliveries in bulk of essentials (washing up liquid, washing liquid, cleaning products, cat litter, vitamins, toiletries, etc.) has been great. I don’t even have to think about it and you can’t buy some of eco brands in massive containers in the shops. Even things like spirits are much cheaper than shops.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 24/03/2025 16:34

Nope - I absolutely love Amazon and have no plans to leave.

Rollercoaster1920 · 24/03/2025 16:37

I avoid amazon for some of those reasons. E.g. long delivery times from marketplace, potential fakes. But also i dislike any one company being so dominant.
For reasonable branded stuff I've found Argos a good alternative with pick up in Sainsburys.

WhisperingTree · 24/03/2025 16:37

The problems you have are you, not Amazon’s.

I love Amazon. But it’s a platform like others. I also use EBay, Shein and Temu. I will look at what’s cheaper. I hate going to the shops where I can never find anything.

Darkclothes · 24/03/2025 16:38

I agree- its a YOU issue OP! I've never had those issues with them.

I still use them! I do, however, check the cost against other shops, because amazon isn't always the cheapest for every item.

ByEdgyPeer · 24/03/2025 16:40

None of those are Amazon's fault, you just seem incompetent at online shopping.

I absolutely love Amazon, use it almost every day

Oistinemup · 24/03/2025 16:42

I’ve stopped using Amazon. I had Prime for years and found it way too easy to just buy stuff that I could have waited to purchase from an independent in the town centre ( prob at a higher price but that’s okay) .

Since I cancelled Prime I don’t even look on Amazon and can’t say I’ve missed out.

Id rather spend my cash with local retailers and independent UK stores

lezsucks · 24/03/2025 16:47

I stopped using it, I had a prime membership and last year when renewing I could see I’d spent over £90 in streaming one movie and 5 deliveries.
i hate searching for products and typing in a specific brand and getting obscure no brand products as hits on the search engine.
I’d rather buy from retailers with high street stores.

notacooldad · 24/03/2025 16:48

No problem with Amazon.
My town is expensive to park not many major retailers and is full of spice heads!
I can get next day delivery. I have prime so that off sets parking costs and of course i get the streaming service.

If you don't want it because you make ridiculous mistakes and don't check what you are buying that's fair enough but I can buy presents for people and have them sent straight to their address from my account is brilliant. I've never had an issue with overruling or not knowing where my stuff is coming from

I get food that my local stores don't sell and have medication creams dropped to me next day which can in some cases, due to shuft hours, is quicker than going out myself.
I love Amazon market place for second hand items such as books and saved a fortune there rather than buying brand new.

notacooldad · 24/03/2025 16:50

I’d rather buy from retailers with high street stores.
That's awesome if you have retailers on the high street.
We have charity shops, vape shops and bookies!

gmgnts · 24/03/2025 16:51

I love Amazon, especially the second-hand books. I live out in the sticks and it amazes me that I can think of some obscure article that I need (often medical related) and have it delivered here the next day! Their service is absolutely magnificent! 👌

Quercus3 · 24/03/2025 16:54

Haven't used them for 6 years - on the whole very easy to avoid and use alternate online retailers! For my needs, anyway.

PauliesWalnuts · 24/03/2025 16:59

I haven’t used it in years after I discovered they pay very little tax in the uk. Now that Bezos is in the middle of some big dick swinging competition with Musk I’m pretty glad I’ve boycotted.

Loubylie · 24/03/2025 16:59

Many things are cheaper now at Argos or on Ebay.

cramptramp · 24/03/2025 17:02

I’ve had none of these problems. Sounds like these are all because you’re not checking things properly before ordering.

Whycanineverthinkofone · 24/03/2025 17:06

There are many reasons to boycott Amazon.

you being unable to order correctly is not one of them.

so no, I’m not “with you”.

i once ordered 20 packets of bagels from Ocado instead of two. You think everyone should stop using it to support my idiocy?

Tea2cups · 24/03/2025 17:07

@Mistymeg If it works for you then do it. I don't bother with Amazon and also save so much money as it was so easy to buy rubbish you didn't need. Now I can't do that and so buy a lot less stuff! I am lucky enough to live near a busy high street though where I can pretty much buy anything. So no shade to those that use it.

But also like to give a wave to Jeff Bezos on here and his employees😂

It's so weird so many people have run on here to support Amazon, I mean it's owned by a billionaire who doesn't need your help, why do you care if the OP doesn't want to shop there? 😂 Would you be posting the same if she was talking about Boots?

Elchupacabra · 24/03/2025 17:08

WatchedEverything · 24/03/2025 16:06

100 swim nappies. 😂 I once thought I had ordered 10 loose bananas from Tesco but it was actually 10 packs of 6. It’s still a family joke now.

I wouldn’t like to be without Amazon though. You can just search by things only sold by Amazon which is what I do as I never buy from other sellers on there.

My work colleague hit the '6' button twice in her banana order....the driver asked her if she had a monkey sanctuary in her back garden!

Miffyhasbigears · 24/03/2025 17:22

I do have qualms, but I live in one of those dodgy postcodes where companies either don't deliver or or try to charge an arm and a leg. Local companies can be an absolute joke.
Amazon from day one has delivered here without batting an eye. They've been fair at refunding for late deliveries or damages.

I have found they've got dearer lately and I do check if Ebay has the same item cheaper.
I use World of Books for second hand books and independent publishers for some new. Currys mainly for electricals.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 24/03/2025 17:26

I quit about three years ago. I didn't like their values and felt icky when using them. There are other shops I use online instead. Not as cheap, but not as morally bankrupt.

catmothertes1 · 24/03/2025 17:37

CulturalNomad · 24/03/2025 15:56

Have no plans to ever give up on Amazon. The issues you cited are easily avoided, can't beat the convenience and returns are amazingly simple.

Unfortunately buying local just doesn't work out sometimes. Trouble finding what I need, nothing in stock, poor customer service and ridiculous return policies.

We were looking for replacement spatulas the other day and went round 5 shops(2 in our small town and 3 in a retail park). Could not find what we wanted at all. Amazon provided an entire set of 5 for a fiver and they arrived the next day.

Sunpeace · 24/03/2025 18:05

I have a couple of months left on my Prime membership and won't be renewing. It's convenient at times but I don't think I get my money's worth on delivery costs as I quite like shopping around and getting don't like the ethos of the company
