Definitely getting my daughter a Yoto for her birthday, but just wondering if anyone had an opinion if the original player is worth the extra money or shall I just get the mini?

We have a mini and my DD7 loves it, she's had it 2 years and she uses every single night before bed. She really likes the daily pod cast.

Not sure what extra features the main Yoto has but the mini works great for us and easy to pack if we are travelling

How old is she? Mini is best for headphone style use, regular is better for speakers.

Regular also has a night light.

@phoenixbiscuits she's turning 3 so wasn't thinking headphones for her so that's good to know

I think it depends where you intend to use it most

We have the Yoto and we use it at home most of the time

My friend got the mini as she thought she'd use it in the car more

I think I'm going to get the mini next Christmas for my DD

Our almost 3 year old had a mini for Christmas- it’s great. We don’t take it out a great deal but I like the option, we don’t use headphones either.

We have a standard in the bedroom that both DS share. They both listen to it at night, it also has a clock and offers a bit of light. They can also listen to the radio.
They both have a mini each that they use with headphones in the car or they take them with them to listen to at the grandparents.

I don't see the point in the big one. The speaker on the mini is great.

dijonketchup · 10/02/2025 22:56

We love the mini, both mine love theirs! The sound is fine on speaker. We use them for radio listening at breakfast, impromptu dance parties, car journeys, bedtimes… I prefer the minis as they are more like an old fashioned Walkman - not too big to carry in a child’s backpack. As they get a bit older I imagine they will use them like this, to store media they listen to on headphones.

Get ‘adventure jackets’ with a cord so they can carry them round without bumping them.

There are headphones for little ones with a Velcro band that aren’t uncomfortable for them. My 3yo had these for e.g. plane journeys.

We have the “big” one for each kid (5 and 1). They’re almost exclusively used for bedtime, and I like the clock, as well as the nightlight feature for when DD occasionally comes into our room at night or when we’re travelling and she’s in an unfamiliar room. DD does occasionally use her player on very long drives, but as we’re in the car and it sits beside her it’s no bother it being bulky. I was weighing up between the two but am glad I got the original players as opposed to the mini. Very much depends on how you think you’ll use it, easier said than done!

Just bumping this with some questions! Does the mini not have the clock and night light features? Can you use headphones with both? Thanks!

The Mini has a clock which you can set for day and night time. My 3 year old knows he can’t get up until 7am because he can see the sun on the display. No nightlight but the display has a little moon and stairs glowing through the night. Yes it has a headphone jack. The Yoto brand headphones are brilliant.
