Is this ok for a 4 year's old b-day party?

My daughter really loved the dress:
https://www.laredoute.co.uk/ppdp/prod-350282609.aspx#srt=noSorting&shoppingtool=treestructureflyout

It looks beautiful and suits her, but I keep thinking it's more like a flower girl/bridesmaids dress, not a b-day party dress.

What's your opinion?

4 year olds don't need birthday parties as they won't remember then. This is about you.

Kids birthday parties from 6.

Thats a sad outlook on life - my almost 4 year old doesn’t need a birthday party but she’s very excited about it, and it’s bringing her joy. She also doesn’t need to go to ballet or do hobbies, but she loves them. Almost like life is about more than just doing the bare minimum of what you “need”.

No one ‘needs’ a birthday party. No they might not remember it, but that’s not the point. They’d be having fun at that moment in time, which is what parents want for their kids. Do you not do anything with your kids til they’re 6 then? If they don’t remember anything, then I guess there’s no point!

It's beautiful from the front. Personally I think the suitability is questionable at the back for a child but that's just my thoughts.

Asked my sister to find out if it was just my thoughts & she agreed, back of dress more suited to an adult.

Edited

What are you worried people might see? Her bra strap? She’s 4. They’ll see…. back ….

i don’t get that at all.

Not sure I get your point?

There was another thread criticising AR for wearing a white “bridesmaid” dress in the HoC. It seems to have gone poof though so my comment has fallen somewhat flat!

Jabbabong · 29/01/2025 15:27

It looks lovely but it might get ruined.

She does, for sure. She's been to other kids birthday and she talks about her future birthday party almost every day. How she wants to invite all her friends, have a cake etc.

That's hilarious 🤣

No reason why she can't put an apron on while she's eating.

I'm laughing at the idea that £22.50 is "cheap" for a child's dress 😂

Would love to know where you get pretty party/wedding guest dresses for little girls in that case! Always happy for recommendations!

kirinm · 29/01/2025 15:55

Looks like a summer dress rather than a bridesmaid dress to me.

Zebracat · 29/01/2025 16:00

I love the dress. It seems very cool and understated compared to Disney princesses. Sort of thing I would have tried and failed to promote. I would love to see a bridesmaid wear it too, but think it would be seen by many as too plain.

@Derbee Primark, Peacocks, Pep and Co, H+M, the supermarkets......

A quick look on their websites shows primark and peacocks don’t have anything comparable and H&M party/formal dresses are about £20.

Needmorelego · 29/01/2025 16:28

@Derbee it's the wrong time of year for dresses really but Primark etc is usually pretty good in the summer (or for sparkly ones at Christmas).
I probably wouldn't buy a 4 year old a formal dress though. But that's me personally. Obviously people are different.
Edit : actually I just looked on the Primark site. Plenty of pretty dresses in the 1 - 7 age group on there.

Fair enough, difference of opinion. I wouldn’t agree that anything on the primark website is comparable to OP’s dress, or appropriate for a party. Cheap yes, pretty no.

@Derbee I think this is cute and pretty for a 4 year old - but obviously people have different tastes.

I have it on reliable authority (my DD - aged 3) that that dress is not tutu-y enough for a party - I tried to buy it (or one incredibly similar) for her to wear to a party but apparently it’s a no. I agree it’s cute and pretty, but kids that age have their own very firm opinions on these things I’ve found 😅🤦🏼‍♀️

Needmorelego · 29/01/2025 18:35

@Nottodaythankyou123 that is so true 😂
When my daughter was 4 she chose to wear grey trackies bottoms and a thick hoodie to a birthday party.
She wore the hood up and looked like a teeny tiny emo.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 29/01/2025 18:40

is there another colour? Ah its her birthday let her have it!

Gymrabbit · 29/01/2025 19:08

I don’t think it looks like a bridesmaids dress in the slightest. Far too plain.
my 9 year old (who does have an interesting sense of fashion) would wear this on a random day.
the colour isn’t ideal but other than that let her go for it.

I agree with your DD! It’s an everyday dress. Definitely not a party dress.

Got to pick your battles 😂 my motto is “if it’s a big deal to them and a small deal to you, let it go” 🤷🏼‍♀️

SausageRoll2020 · 29/01/2025 19:25

It's a bit casual to be a bridesmaid dress. It's a sweet little dress and if you can't wear a pretty dress to celebrate your 4th birthday then when can you?

Can always pop a colourful little cardi over the top too

DottieMoon · 29/01/2025 19:28

Looks more of a summer than flower girl dress.

Even if it did look more like a flower girl/ bridesmaid dress, I would let my DD wear it, it’s her birthday!

Itsbeenabadday · 29/01/2025 19:34

Looks lovely but a bit chilly for this time of year, especially at the back!
