Is this ok for a 4 year's old b-day party?

My daughter really loved the dress:
https://www.laredoute.co.uk/ppdp/prod-350282609.aspx#srt=noSorting&shoppingtool=treestructureflyout

It looks beautiful and suits her, but I keep thinking it's more like a flower girl/bridesmaids dress, not a b-day party dress.

What's your opinion?

It should be fine. We are planning just games or simple dance moves, nothing complicated.

sounds great. I would get her a sparkly cardigan to add warmth and make it less bridesmaidy.
Hope you are not planning to serve anything with tomato sauce…

Kiddies look perfect and appropriate whatever they wear at that age - she could wear a party dress, wellies with a jumper, a bear onesie or Frozen costume - no-one would bat an eyelid.

But FWIW I think she will look extra adorable in the little party dress she's chosen.

It’s fine if she likes it. Just looks like a plain dress that will probably be ruined. Isn’t there anything more exciting? They don’t wear party dresses for long. You can get gorgeous sparkly ones hardly worn from Vinted for a few pounds

Thanks. It is quite sparkly (to my standard) already! Looked at dresses on vinted but did not like anything ☹️

It’s fine. No one will think twice about it.
Could be a bit cold at this time of year though.

Thanks for your input everyone!

I think it's perfect OP.

My DD wore a very similar dress at her 4th birthday. She loved it, it washed well she wore it a lot afterwards and it is now stored away in the attic with all the other sentimental clothing- now that my DD is 24.

I think it is important to allow some say in what they wear. Even a 2 year old can choose which socks they would like to wear.
My mother was very strict with my clothing, and it felt very undermining.

No red ( the colour of harlots- and yes she would tell me that when I was 6 ).
No yellow- made me look sallow and jaundiced.
No short sleeves because my arms were too skinny and ugly.

My DD remembers when I said yes to the dress she chose- similar price, and she was so happy. As long as clothing fits criteria for children- price, suitability, warmth, duirability etc. then there is no bad choice

It’s fine and doesn’t look like a bridesmaid dress. More a summery dress

InTheRainOnATrain · 29/01/2025 09:30

It looks like a dressy summer dress. The kind of thing you’d put them in to go to a nice restaurant in the south of france in August. Or at least that’s the vibe it’s giving to me! So, travel plans dependent but I think you might even get rewear out of it so long as you have the vanish ready for the inevitable fruit shoot and icing stains! The only issue I can think of is that at this time of year she might be cold in it but that’s nothing that can’t be solved by putting a white long sleeved t-shirt underneath. Hope she has a great party! Let her wear the dress!

HPandthelastwish · 29/01/2025 09:35

It's fine doesn't look bridesmaidy to me, perhaps more wedding guest but that's fine. Not great for this weather though so can be dressed down with a cardigan, tights and high top trainers. Lots of children wear wedding guest clothes to parties after the main event to get more wear out of them

Only let her wear it if you aren't going to be fretting about the mess she should be having fun not worrying mummy's going to be cross she spilt her drink.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/01/2025 10:08

It's sweet and simple.

I was expecting something quite different i.e. over the top with frills and flounces :)

Goldbar · 29/01/2025 10:10

It's fine. At my DC's 4th birthday party, we had some nice party dresses, several princesses, a pirate (it wasn't a costume party 😅), lots of t-shirts and leggings/joggers and one little girl who took her clothes off and ran around in her knickers the whole party. No one batted an eyelid.

Moveoverdarlin · 29/01/2025 10:53

Don’t think it looks like a bridesmaid dress. It’s the sort of dress I’d buy for a holiday. Looks very cold though. I’d rule it out for a February / March birthday party. It’s sleeveless and has a cut out in the back.

Epidote · 29/01/2025 11:33

The dress is OK for summer.

ClairDeLaLune · 29/01/2025 13:25

Ooh no OP - she might grow up to be Angela Rayner! (See other thread.)

No way for a party. I'm not one of "if it gets stained chuck it' Brigade. I couldn't be bothered with such an easily stained item.

Washing white clothes really isn’t that hard. Most kids party food isn’t going to permanently stain clothes.

Have you ever met any cheesy Wotsits 😂

Derbee · 29/01/2025 14:18

I’d say it’s slightly smarter than a typical summer dress. Certainly not wedding party/bridal. It may get stained being white, but it’s cheap and it’s what she wants to wear. Don’t understand why it warrants any thought about appropriateness?

Needmorelego · 29/01/2025 14:20

I'm laughing at the idea that £22.50 is "cheap" for a child's dress 😂

No, nothing major, maybe just the photos on the website look like they are taken at the wedding. And also the fact that it's so white. But it could be just my impression anyway (not a massive expert in flower girl dresses!)

4 year olds don't need birthday parties as they won't remember then. This is about you.

Kids birthday parties from 6.

Thanks for an idea about a cardi everyone. It will be in the end of march and she will be running inside a room but I might get one just in case.

I am kind of know what you mean. I guess they meant on a larger scale of things as smart-ish dresses for kids can be insanely expensive!

OP, we're talking about a four-year-old at her birthday party, not an adult in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. Unless you're having the party at the Ritz, there's not a rigid dress code for four-year-olds at their own birthday parties.

It really doesn't matter whether you think her dress might be similar to one a flower girl would wear, because it's her birthday party and she's a tiny child and all that really matters is that she loves her dress and feels happy in it. Just let her wear the dress.
