Son is turning 5 next week and we'd like to get him a bike. He currently zooms about on a balance bike in the garden on max height, we gave him a second hand bike last year which he tried once or twice and hated. He keeps saying it's too big and wants a small bike with pedals. He's around 110cm in height and v.light. I've looked about as budget is tight and it seems he's on the cusp of 14/16". 14" are typically Eva wheels which I don't think I like but I think 16" may end up making him feel its too big again although will give better longevity

To make matters worse his older brother is outgrowing his bike which is 14". I don't feel I can hand it down though as he wants and probably finally deserves something"first" for a change

Should add I've checked eBay and vinted and there's nothing local

My dd had a 14 inch for her first bike and it was great. I can't remember when she got a 16 but I do remember thinking it was the right decision. I think it's better to get an inexpensive 14 and replace it when necessary to get their confidence up.

As you have got a 14 I'd just let him have it without making a big deal about it and get him something else for his birthday.

I'd agree. But that would mean I need to buy his older sibling a new bike which seems cruel. His birthday isn't until October.

Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I didn't think of that!

It will probably be easier to get a 16 second hand than a 14 as lots of people don't get 14s.

Maybe get him something else for his birthday, let him have goes on his brother's 14 and keep a look out for a second hand 16 in the meantime. Then by this time next year he might be ready for a new 16.

Have a look at islabikes or something similar - we had the same problem with preferring the balance bike as couldn't ride the heavier bike we had got him. Within a day of having the islabike he was riding whereas we had tried for months on the other one. We went straight to it with the younger one and he was riding fully from 4 1/2

Have you looked at bikeclub?
