Cheap but half-way decent digital camera?

Have been encouraging DD (10) to save her pocket money and other money to buy something decent, rather than frittering it away on "girlie crap". She really wants a digital camera, and has about £40. Am concerned that the cheaper cameras might not give good quality pictures and be disappointment to her. Can anyone recommend one? Doesn't need to be a kiddie's camera, just easy to use and reasonable pictures.
Thanks.

I remember a thread about this before - hang on let me see if I can do a search!

mishymoo · 28/04/2008 12:24

I can't do a proper search for some reason but I remember something about cameras for about £30 for kids around christmas time.

lilolilmanchester · 28/04/2008 12:26

Thanks Mishymoo, should have done a search myself. I do remember a thread but it was for younger children, fisher price type. DD would be ok with a regular camera, really want to know if anyone has got one which does give reasonable pics. Thanks for reminding me, will take a look...

my one is a vivitar vivicam 5308 and is real good

We have a hewlett packard thing for DTDs which we paid £25 for .

Is great. Proper camera 5meg, image stabilisation. BUT it does not have an optical zoom.

It was a special deal at the time from Misco.

Just browsing on misco this looks fab value if you can stretch a bit more

this one is bang on £40. Seems to get good reviews here. I suspect this will be miles better than the Vivitar. I have heard disappointing things about that. The Samsung is cheap as it is end of line stock so would wonce have been much more expensive making it better value IMO

SlightlyMadSweet · 28/04/2008 20:50

(sorry that second one is out of stock)

lilolilmanchester · 28/04/2008 21:55

Thanks both of you. She could stretch to more (by waiting a bit longer) - will have a look at all your suggestions and discuss with DH (if I can ever get him away from the snooker - could take a while!)

YOu don't necessarily need 5meg.

It is a false economy. More megapixels does not mean better quality. It is a marketing gimik.

SlightlyMadSweet · 28/04/2008 22:20

Or ebay?

I know it is a risk buying second hand but she could get a bargain.

aldi had this one last Thursday - they may still have some left.

Good package, including 1GB SD card and charger with 2 rechargeable batteries. Aldi things usually good quality.
