epilators? Any good?

I just got a phillips epilator with 'massage' head attached and used it for the first time and as far as I can tell it's not a patch on using wax strips which I've been doing for years.

My legs feel a bit stubbly as though it's just ripped the hairs in half rather than pulled them out.

Anybody got any info on these? Experiences? Should I persist or chuck it in the bin?

I epilate everything that needs it - legs, pits, bikini line. I tend to do it once a week, couldn't cope with waiting til it was long enough for a wax. Went for a professional leg-wax once, and was really disappointed. It didn't do as good a job as my epilator and only went to just above my knees, whereas I like to be smooth right up to my bum (which thankfully isn't too hairy!)
Regrowth is a lot finer than it used to be, ad the pain gets less the longer you keep at it.

I use a braun epilator on my lower legs. Its great, legs stay smooth for ages. Not so painful if I then just remove stubbly regrowth.

Use it on my bikini line also.

I've lost a bit of mine, and gone back to shaving, but it's not nearly as good.
The eilator was painful to start with, but it gets easier each time, and the hairs come back finer. Also you don't need to wait for them to grow, they can be whipped out very short. Lasts longer than shaving too. But I don't think I could bear the pain anywhere but my legs

foxythesnowfox · 28/04/2008 08:33

Imaginaryfriend - Its certainly as effective as a home wax, and has the advantage as others have said of not having to wait for the hair to grow. Its very quick and not at all messy.

I had my armpits waxed once, and found it excrutiating so I've never tried to epilate there. But I can do my 'tash without too much pain.

Oh, and that Silk Epil is a bit scary when you first turn it on, it whizzes really fast and is quite noisy. Took me a while to build up the courage to use it! But it has lots of different bits for different parts of your body. It also has a cool pack. And if you take a couple of paracetomol, or have a glass of pain, that's meant to help numb the pain. Plus its a bargain on Amazon at the mo.

Mumooms · 28/04/2008 09:00

foxythesnowfox which braun silk epil do you have? Just looked on amazon and there are about a million different ones!

milou2 · 28/04/2008 09:01

ideally i'd do it once a week, but tend to get lazy.

for me it's easiest straight after a shower, dry myself first, obviously. i run an extension cord into the bathroom while the shower is warming up so i can use the epilator while the bathroom is still warm afterwards.

if i get too hairy i wax as that is less painful and quicker.

Furball · 28/04/2008 09:01

lol at 'glass of pain'

imaginaryfriend · 28/04/2008 09:27

I'll definitely have a glass of pain first then!

I used it on my legs on Saturday but some areas felt quite stubbly afterwards that's why I wondered. The pain wasn't a huge issue for me.

If you use it on a tash does the area go red after?

I've been using an epilator (the same one) on my legs for about 20 years now, and reckon I've saved a fortune on waxing. Whilst it's never pleasant, it's not so bad either. I tend to do mine after coming out of the shower, so that the pores are more open. I have found that hair no longer regrows on parts of my legs at all, and what there is left is now fine and sparsley populated!

foxythesnowfox · 28/04/2008 10:00

wine, obviously! But you know what I meant!!

I have the silk epil which is reduced from 69.00 to 39.99.

Cappuccino · 28/04/2008 10:02

I've used one for years

is fab

it is just a bog standard one as well and I'm not even sure the massager bit works anymore

you are all a bunch of wusses

imaginaryfriend · 28/04/2008 11:48

I got a Philips one with massager but couldn't completely see the point of the massager so I used to side without it and it was much quicker.
