I have no idea what I want

I don't know how much my mum & dad will spend maybe £150-£250

So what do I look out for?
What do I buy?
Where from?

TIA

Lucky you!

If you just want diamond studs, you are as well to go to H Samuel or (gasp) even Argos. There's no design element so there's no point going to Tiffany or Cartier. Diamonds and gold are both graded objectively so there's absolutely no point paying a premium for a blue/red box. Studs don't need to be internally flawless, and IMHO you're better going for size over either colour or flawlessness.

If you want something a little different, these are at the top end of your budget but the set is lovely. Obviously they're not top-quality diamonds, but even at that grade they'll still sparkle. They're reserved for someone else but I'm sure she'd make you another set.

Do you really want earrings? I have lost one of all the pairs I own...

PosieParker · 20/04/2008 07:31

I'm not sure you can get them with that budget, you're better off getting a different stone... are there no others you like?

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/04/2008 07:36

Hmmm - I agree with Posie. You won't get a lot of choice for that budget, sorry.

As for where to go, if you want to look at lots of different types, or even design your own, then go to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham.

PosieParker · 20/04/2008 08:02

CSWS, does that mean I could design my own eternity ring???

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/04/2008 08:29

I did Posie.

GrapefruitMoon · 20/04/2008 10:03

Disagree that you won't gat any for that budget - my local independent jewelers did when I was looking for some for my 40th - they looked lovely (though dh did spend a bit more than that in the end...)

PosieParker · 20/04/2008 11:46

I just think a tiny diamond (and I may be wrong I am not a diamond merchant) will look like a tiny diamond and a bit diamond for diamond's sake. An ethical diamond usually costs more too, besides there are an abundance of beautiful pieces of jewelery with other stones that look a bit more tasteful that a spot of a diamond.

PosieParker · 20/04/2008 11:47

Wow, that's lovely CSWS.

Nbg · 20/04/2008 12:00

This is what sort of size you'd be looking at for that kind of price}

0.15ct isnt very big tbh.
I think for earrings you need at least 0.30ct to be able to see them and get a good sparkle from them.

I have a pair of quite small diamond studs which are timelwess and classy and I always think a pair of small pearl studs look good...I have small freshwater ones..

PosieParker · 20/04/2008 12:46

0.25ct are a little more than £250 aren't they? for that price you're looking at 0.30ct in total.

KatyMac · 20/04/2008 17:59

I have rubies & emeralds

Sapphires maybe

I just had a yen for diamonds

Little sparkly ones with no (or very little) setting showing

Just been shopping and looked in shop window and for £275 saw a very sparkly pair for £275, so you never know!!

cocolepew · 20/04/2008 18:07

buy these and spend the rest on shoes/bag/alcohol/young men

jingleyjen · 20/04/2008 18:12

what about these
They have a search by price and stone section, so if you don't like these there were others.

KatyMac · 20/04/2008 18:15
