During our visit to a local Iceland store my husband and I purchased a bottle of bleach at the till. Unfortunately, the bottle was faulty, resulting in bleach spilling all over my DH hands and arms, as well as contaminating the rest of our purchased items. Concerned about the immediate danger of bleach exposure, we asked the young cashier staff member at the till if there was a sink available where we could wash our hands. I’m also visibly 6.5 months pregnant. She refused our request and, despite initially saying she would check for wipes, failed to provide any. Due to the long queue behind us, we were ultimately only offered some tissue paper, which I felt was grossly insufficient for dealing with such a hazardous substance. The queue was very large so we didn’t want to make a scene so paid and left. We found a half empty water bottle in the car and my dh washed his hands with this outside.
After leaving the store and returning home—approximately 15 minutes later—my DH fingers began to burn and become sore due to the bleach exposure.
I am awaiting a response from Iceland but what would be an appropriate response from them I can expect?
