We're changing our kitchen and want to put in granite worktops, but the quote we got from Magnet (it's an existing magnet kitchen) is a bit on the ridiculous side!! Does anyone have any recommendations for a company that doesn't charge the earth?

Dh found a company online called graniteworktops-direct.com. Anyone used them?

There is a company in the New Forest (hampshire) that does Granite on top of MDF so not as thick or as expensive as soild worksurfaces.

Will try and find them, only seen adverts in local press.

Magnet are expensive but the company they use is called Whitehall Fabrications. They are based in Leeds but they did mine in Colchester.

handlemecarefully · 04/01/2005 22:47

argggghhh! - don't do it! Go for something more practical

cas73 · 04/01/2005 23:51

Why? what's wrong with granite?

It has a highly polished finish so when you wipe it down after use it drys all streaky unless you buff it dry every time with a teatowel / bit of kitchen roll etc. I have granite work tops and this drives me mad. I don't have time to be 'buffing' !

lyndap · 05/01/2005 11:48

Lakeland Limited have some great polish for cleaning granite (I am a sad lakeland devotee)
Granite does need a bit of buffing to look its showroom best but I think it still looks pretty good the other 364 days when I haven't buffed it. Plus you can put stuff on it straight out of the oven and apparently it's good for rolling pastry....

crunchie · 07/01/2005 16:00

I am sorry hmc Granite is fab. Just search for other threads they discuss the pros and cons. I love my granite - and yes I havethe black shiney stuff which all I do is wipe with a wet cloth and then once I have finished spend 30 seconds drying with a teatowel. Perfect!!

ChicPea · 13/01/2005 23:36

cas73, we had all our granite/marble made by Granite UK and they did a fabulous job. They do all types of granite and great profiles (edges) as well. If you CAT me I will email you the fitter's phone number so you can speak to him direct. Highly highly recommend and they work in London and all over the UK. PS. Had various quotes and theirs was the best and high quality workmanship.

There's a company called MacPherson Design Consultants www.macphersondesign.co.uk
They did all the stone work throughout my house, and they were excellent. A guy called Stewart came around at first to go through all the options. He also scheduled everything around my builder and kitchen company (which is more than a service you'd get from Magnet), and it worked out less than if I went through my kitchen supplier!

lastboxoftampons · 06/04/2009 16:34

Cas - you must try this company www.greekmarbles.com/ I know the website looks cheesy, but we received such fab and quaint service from them. The owner is Yiannis and we ended up with black honed granite (matt finish). His price was much much cheaper than anyone else we looked at. I think in the end we ended up paying about £1700 for about 5.5 linear meters of countertop with cut-outs for an undermounted sink and a hob, a windowsill and 5 drainer grooves. The men who came to template and install were absolutely lovely and very professional. We were really pleased with the whole process.

lastboxoftampons · 06/04/2009 16:35

Meant to add that they have a warehouse type office in Vauxhall and then a showroom in Kingston-upon-Thames.

I'm not sure where you are but i just had a new kitchen (and 2 bedrooms) from fineline interiors in Oldham they were fantastic, very reasonably priced and the staff were fantastic. We were dealt with all the way through by a member of the management team and had no problems whatsoever. Goodluck getting your kitchen finished! x
