Sylvanian families or Playmobil?

Ok, my dd is after some Sylvanian Family bits and bobs for her 6th birthday. She loves all those girly things like puppies in my pocket, anything fairylike, small and fiddly, preferably pink and cute.
Have noticed a lot of MN Playmobil fans/freaks over time, but funnily no Sylvanian Family groupies. Is that just because they (SF fans)are to busy with other matters or is Playmobil the superior toy?
What shall I buy? If consensus is that Sylvanian Family really is the inferior toy I'm sure I can persuade my daughter to change allegiances. She's very fickle like that!
Must admit I am hankering after a little Bunny Family myself, or maybe a few Foxes, and I've also noticed a very cute Family of Bears.
What do I go for?

Sylvanians are more 'girly'. leetle houses and babies. my DD1 loved hers. had loads over the years. DD2 however was more into playmobil - colected the seaside stuff and boats etc.

princessmel · 09/04/2008 18:05

I LOVED S.F My sister and I played with them a lot.
I hope dd likes them.

I vote Sylvanian Families!!

belgo · 09/04/2008 18:07

I alternate between being a playmobil freak and a lego freak - but I do like S.F - it's just that they seem very expensive for what you get.

PLAYMOBIL IS WORK OF THE DEVIL IT COMES IN ENCHANTING BOXES PROMISING HOURS OF FUN .....YOU OPEN IT ON A VEXED XMAS MORNING OR BIRTHDAY AND YOU RE PRESENT WITH A MILLION AND ONE BITS ALL NEEDING STICKERS AND CONSTRUCTION ONCE TOGETHER ITS OK BUT EXPECT PREP WORK OF AT LEAST 2 HOURS ......

windygalestoday · 09/04/2008 18:08

i was shouting to get my point across lol

DD had a massive collection of Sylvanian families, mostly collected from car boot sales, though she did get some of the bigger bits for birthdays/Christmas - her favourite was the canal boat. Most of them are still in the loft awaiting potential grandchildren.
I think the Sylvanians have more character than Playmobil - some of them have great names - my favourites were the squirrel Furbanks family - the Dad was called Douglas!

Hey great so I can indulge on SF without any worries then? Great thanks!
Maybe ds will trial the Playmobil when he's bigger. Then I can compare!
Thanks all

My dc never got into Playmobil but dd(6) has been playing with Sylvanian since she was four.
It is very pricey and lots of fiddly stuff which go missing.
However my dd loves collecting the families (there used to be a fox family called Neil and Christine Hamilton!)

dancingonthelilypads · 09/04/2008 18:12

Ooh I like the sound of Douglas already!

The Hamiltons don't intrigue me half as much as Douglas Furbank!

Have a look at this thread for lots of info on playmobil.

Niecie · 09/04/2008 18:16

Ah but if you get the Playmobil you can add to it for DS - you don't have to have two sets of stuff cluttering up the place (I am sure it 'breeds' in the toy box).

Playmobil gets the vote in our house but then I only have boys. Playmobil do a nice pink palace too!

dancingonthelilypads · 09/04/2008 18:19

Thanks will investigate. A pink palace sounds good!

Oh go for the Sylvanians! My dd still loves hers. She's 8 and a half. If you're looking for SF groupies you can join her up for the SF club - it's full of them photos and all.
I think I was more excited when FC gave her the vegetable garden set in her stocking!

My boys have playmobil and they do enjoy it but it's not as girly as Sf and their stuff does seem more aimed at boys imo.

LIZS · 10/04/2008 16:48

We have both

lydiathetattooedlady · 10/04/2008 18:02

i love sylvanian families! my mum has kept mine and my sisters for when my dd gets abit bigger!

scanner · 10/04/2008 18:04

We also have both, but the SF come from ebay - so less expensive. The playmobil gets used more.

foofi · 10/04/2008 18:05

They are both fab, and we are keeping both companies in business!

Never buy SF stuff on ebay - it can be REALLY dirty and after you've scrubbed everything for hours with cotton wool buds you'll wonder why you didn't just buy new.

brightwell · 10/04/2008 19:14

My dd loved Sylvanians, we sorted the loft out a few weeks ago and she got them out & played with them over a weekend. Don't think she'll be admitting to it though.

brightwell · 10/04/2008 19:15

She's 13.
