I want to get a handheld for DS1 for his birthday but DH and I are complete luddites and have no clue. He says he wants a "gameboy" but I thought Nintendo DS was the thing to have? Any advice very welcome. Also what age do you think they need to be to really appreciate it - wonder if DS is bit young but he is very computer literate?

Gameboys are a bit past it now. DS is the thing to have - they also take gamboy games and their own littler cartridges. Or Sony PSP but i don't know anything about them as we've got both gameboys (from a few yrs ago) and DS. youngest DD was 6 or 7 when she got her gameboy. my nephews have got DS - youngest was about 5.

Definitely a DS. We are firm converts. Robust little gadgets, lots of good software for them.

I got a DS for y birthday last month and I absolutely love it.

Now, I'm a 29 year old woman - not a young boy - but it gets my seal of approval. again.

gameboys are a bit obsolete now, so you would end up having to get the games etc second hand. DS are thing to have, and easier for little kids to play with, as they are voice and touch activated as well as with the fiddly keypad keys.
