nice dept store in chicago, like John Lewis?

what would be the equivalent of John Lewis department store in Chicago? A lovely friend has just bought her first flat and I wanted to send a gift voucher - but not sure of type. Is Target on the cheapish end? Are there nice house-y things there? Or Macy's - is that a regular place with regular prices to match?

thanks so much

Memories slowly coming back to me

Macy's is your best bet, I think - good homewares, quite upmarket. It's in a beautiful historic building too so the shopping experience is v nice!

There is a bloomingdales in Chicago but IIRC it doesn't have a home dept - just clothing.

brilliant, and based on that I'll grab my credit card! I hope they can do it online....

thanks doggiesayswoof, that's great.

Ah, to have John Lewis in the USA. Unfortunately, nothing comes close.

There are some non-department stores, that have similar quality and uniqueness though.

Don't know if they are in Chicago, but Cost Plus International Market is very good. Sears Great Indoors is good (actually, thinking about it, not to far removed from JLP). Bed Bath and Beyond is a bit pile 'em high, but an interesting shop and definitely does gift vouchers.

Any standard department store will have something that your friends will be happy to buy.

Marshall Fields is the main Chicago Dept store, think they've been bought out by Macy's or Bloomingdales. Also great for homeware: Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn, both have v tempting stores on Michigan Ave.

Oh yes Crate & Barrel is lovely.

It was Macy's who bought Marshall Field's.
