Help - I need the most perfect kitchen and dining table to be the hub of my home!

I need to get a table that will be used every day for every meal but also sits in my living room. So, it needs to be practical with two toddlers and look fabulous at the same time!

Oh, and I'd quite like it to be extendable with the extending leaf living in the table (ie not stored elsewhere) Tall order I know but I know mners know everything. So - do I get glass or wood? Is there anything I should bear in mind? Has anyone seen anything fitting the bill (seating 4-6 when not extended)? Where would you go to look for such a magic table?
