Desperately need fashion advice

I'm really in need of a wardrobe overhaul and desperately need some advice! I'm in my 30s and don't think my fashion has changed much since I was in my early 20s. I'm worried I dress too young for my age and the clothes I wear aren't fashionable. I know I should wear things I like rather than follow trends but I need some inspiration to move me away from styles that just aren't doing it for me anymore so can find new clothes that I love and that are more appropriate.

I live in a small town and feel really out of touch with the rest of the world.

Please can someone share their ideas? E.g, people to check out on Pinterest / Instagram, fashion blogs, outfit suggestions, general tips for styling, shops to check out.

I really like the London minimalist look (long coat, straight jeans, white trainers) but wouldn't want to get stuck just wearing one sort of outfit. I also like wearing some vintage tops so I'd like to be able to still wear those but paired with the right things so I don't look like a grandma!

I've shared some pics I found that I like. Thanks in advance!

Hi OP,

I’d advise taking stock of your current wardrobe and figuring out which pieces you regularly reach for. We tend rewear the same items because of comfort and functionality. It’s easy to get caught up in the Pinterest aesthetic of long woollen coats paired with chic boots but if you spend most of your time pavement pounding in a rainy city, you’re new investments will likely join the wardrobe graveyard.

Next step, a Marie Kondo style gutting of your wardrobe. Have you worn it in the last 6 months? Would you repurchase this item? Be ruthless and sell/donate items that no longer serve you.

By now you’ve probably seen a pattern emerging in the items you want to keep. If you’ve decided you are happiest in jeans and comfortable trainers, you can start to update these pieces, for example, retire the skinny jeans and invest in a good quality pair of straight jeans. Its harder to keep up with trends as you get older. Invest in core items (jeans, shoes, bags) and keep it fresh by mixing in a trendy sweater for example.

My last piece of advice would be to shop at places with a smaller curated selection. I find places like ASOS so overwhelming with choice, whereas shops like & Other Stories have a carefully paired down stock that is easier to chose from.

Good luck!
