I need a car!!!!!! Please recommend one!!!!

I'm learning to drive. Thoroughly terrified. Am thinking should probably buy a car then will be more likely to get out and practice more.

Needs to be cheap lol. And -very- cheap on fuel because one of the reasons I need it is to drive many miles three times a week.

Most importantly I don't want to feel like if I was in a minor crash it will crumple around me n the kids.

Any suggestions? It needs to be old cos it needs to be under £1000. A friend had a small four door peugout something or other which she loved...

My friend loves her Honda Jazz but I'm sure they've been around that long to get one that price IYSWIM

corsa's are pretty good, you can get really good ones for that kind of money,they are cheap to run/tax/spare parts and cheap to insure.
fiestas are nice little cars but expensive to insure.
peugeot 106's or 306's are nice little cars too but can also be quite expensive to insure.
i would do some insurance quotes BEFORE you even think of buying a car, as you may be surprised at the difference in price between models of car
we just bought a second car, and i had seen a fiesta 1.4 but it was going to be £800 to insure, whereas a 1.2 corsa was only £123!!!)
