I don't really want a 4x4 so what are the alternatives. I cuurently drive an Audi A4 which I love and I know I would miss the power and the sturdiness of that.

So, is there anything on the market that isn't 4x4 but is larger than your average car, can fit in 4 children (plus an adult). I want something that ha a good safety record and a bit of power too.

am thinking you need a people carrier, are you ok with one of those???

we have a Ford Galaxy which is great for space and very comfortable but if I cxould afford it I would buy a newer VW Touran- not as big but could accommodate 4 easily. You may need a roof box for holidays but that would be the same for most cars. I think the Touran is quite sporty and has quite good power.

I'm v. happy with a people carrier. Can't vouch for DH's ego tho! He would love to have a Hummer if he could get his hands on one - the original petrol head.

I think he would ideally want one of the Audi 4x4 things but I think they're tooooo big and they cost a fortune to run and they look like hearses.

Hi we have just bought a Touran. We had a Vauxhall Zafira before but found it awkwardly narrow in that you cant fit 3 accross the back seat properly and access to the back row can be awkward too. The Touran isnt any bigger but just slightly wider and keeps the two back seats in the 3rd row (which also fold completely flat). Its not huge but feels solid to drive and suspension much better than Zafira. We nearly went for Renault Grand Scenic which I think is slightly bigger but I didnt like rear visibility. The Galaxy, Alhambra etc second hand ones still have 3rd row seats that you have to remove (ie that dont fold flat although I think brand new models may have been changed). The Ford S Max is highly desirable but not enough around on second hand market for us and we couldnt afford new. It really depends how much extra stuff you need to cart around on a daily basis. I would have liked a slightly bigger boot space but didnt want to drive a huge car! The Tourans seemed quite expensive 2nd hand but hopfully it will last us for a while. We have 2 and another on the way and I just wanted to be able to give the occasional after school friend/grandparent etc a lift as well. I dont know whether this helps at all. I'll try and answer any questions about the Touran if you have any,.
