Does anyone know of anything that is compatible with brio but a bit cheaper? Particularly battery powered trains/houses and the like?

ELC are brio compatible and cheaper. It think Asda and Sainsburys do their own version too.

Have you tried looking on ebay for second hand stuff?

MamaG · 03/03/2008 12:32

Yes, I think Asda train tracks are compatible

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 03/03/2008 12:32

Tesco's wooden track fits with Brio.

TheFallenMadonna · 03/03/2008 12:32

Tesco do, or at least did a battery powered train.

lummox · 03/03/2008 12:36

That's great, thanks very much. I think I'll start with ELC online. I had a quick look on ebay, but the proper brio stuff seemed to be going for fairly high prices.

Two small boys and one battery powered train just isn't working!

Not sure Tescos do it any more. I did get some from there a couple of years ago which was really cheap but I haven't seen it since. Could be just our Tescos though.

choccypig · 03/03/2008 12:39

If you look on E-Bay and sort the results to "nearest first", you can get some bargains on heavy stuff like this. Because the postage is so pricy, a lot of people don;t bid, but if you can collect it's cheaper.

smugmumofboys · 03/03/2008 12:40

Tesco fit iirc.

OrmIrian · 03/03/2008 12:41

My MIL used to buy Tesco's version. Was fine.

MerlinsBeard · 03/03/2008 12:41

tesco, sainsbo, ikea,ELC wooden track all fits with Brio and their trains as well. ELC do quite a lot of battery and none battery powered trains that my boys play with over their thomas ones

MerlinsBeard · 03/03/2008 12:42

and toys r us too.

IIRC the only track and trains that DON'T go is the thomas one that has the stripes across as its smaller

Drusilla · 03/03/2008 12:44

I've bought bits from here before, it's all compatible with Brio. There are several other websites that do cheap Brio compatible stuff. Also, there is loads on ebay but, as you said, watch the price!

lummox · 03/03/2008 12:51

Thanks again to all.

Drusilla that's a great site. Am also on the lookout for party bags and think I'll just get a job lot from them.

Tchibo also do some from time to time. We got a huge box containing interesting pieces including a battery train with headlight reduced to £10 there.

WendyWeber · 03/03/2008 13:04

Lidl regularly sell a big boxful for about £15. Not sure if it has a battery powered train though.

Also, in December I found a fab wooden Thomas the Tank set, with a water tower and a Thomas engine and a whole lovely figure-of-8 track with a bridge for £15 instead of £40 at TK Maxx, but of course you can't ever bank on something being in stock there.
